T610 as replacement for Palm?

I currently have a Sony Clie (Palm) handheld computer/organiser.
I use it to store names and addresses and phone numbers, and to
hold my calendar which is sync'd to Outlook.

Given that the T610 won't store addresses, only phone numbers,
and entering appointments will be a pain using the keypad (but
then almost all of them are entered using Outlook and then
sync'd), I am considering losing the Clie.

Anyone here make real use out of their T610 as an organiser? I
am a bit concerned about the amount of data (phone entries,
diary dates, etc) that it will hold.

Not used my T610 for data storage but have you considered getting a
Handspring Treo? The 180 is available on eBay, the colour 270 from
www.dabs.com and the new 600 from Orange.

I did exactly that - ditched my palm Vx and use my t610

via outlook it's excellent. I use outlook's auto repeat function to enter
about 6 months worth of shifts

if you got short of space you could just delete pictures or games, but I've
never run out of memory

Could you enlighten me how you managed to get it sync with Outlook? I'm
using FMA and the feature isn't yet supported, and I don't know another way.
I'm using a Bluetooth dongle, if that makes any difference.

Tarik

The software that comes with the phone, or you can download it from
sonyericsson.com for free.

I used the native bluetooth explorer. After opening it I went to My
Bluetooth Places\My Device and configured PIM Synchronization.

Works like a charm and I did -NOT- need to install the SE software.

I was using (or trying to) use the PIM Sync if the native BT driver, but
might not have set it up properly (or at all), but the SE software works
so that's OK.
Thanks for the replies

I did that as well to start with, but my BT dongle (MSI) let
me sync all or nothing it seemed. There didn't appear to be
a way to sync only a selection of my diary (ie, last week and
the next four weeks), only the whole lot.

Not yet worked out if I can sync Outlook notes though.

I keep my contacts sorted by category on my Palm and hate the "all or
nothing" approach when doing a sync to the T610 (I use Outlook as
middleware). However like you have discovered with the calender, there
seems to be no way to sync only selected items or a range :-( :-( :-(

Been playing around with it tonight and it *looks* like it
might just do the job I need it to. There may well be an A1
condition Sony Clie going on eBay soon....

I haven't looked at the memory yet - but am I correct then,
in thinking that the total memory is shared among everything.

There's no 'set' phonebook memory, games memory, sms memory?
I don't use the games (at the moment!) or intend to store a
load of pics/themes/ringtones, so almost all the memory will
go on phonebook/diary/notes.

Speaking of which....I can sync contacts, tasks and phonebook
with outlook, but what about notes?

Not quite right, I'm afraid. There is a part of memory reserved for each of
the following: SMS, phonebook, notes, reminders, tasks and I'm not sure
about notes, haven't found the option to check it yet. The rest is shared
between games, pics, sounds, themes, MMS and java progs.
I currently have 3 reminders taking 1% or less of the designated memory,
they're not too big, average I'd say. 14 tasks take about 17% of their
memory, so you do the average-count.
As for the phonebook, there is place for 510 contacts (wasn't this supposed
to be dynamic and not set??), and some place for the e-mails, not sure how
much though.

I'm pretty sure I managed to do that too, don't have much time now to get
into it though, sorry.

Hi Bryan,

thus spoke Bryan Anderson:

It does - just press the (IIRC) "#" key twice (with T9 off)
to insert a CR/LF (or thrice to insert a horizontal line,
too) in e. g. the name field ... et voilá!  ;o)

Thanks for that - need to try it out and see what it does
to the names in Outlook!

Good luck.  We don't use Outlook (for several, well known
reasons), thus I don't know about it.  But nevertheless I
would be interested in the results of your investigations.
;o)
