So... Given that some of the reviews I read about my new z600 and how
you can save a recorded sound as a new ringtone were wrong apparently
- How does one go about creating ringtones? Are they just short midi
files or somethiong like that that can be made then (hopefully)
uploaded to the phone??

Yes exactly that, you can use the software that comes with the phone (z600
has a built in music editor as well) to create your own ringtones, or
download them from the net, transfering can be done via Infared, bluetooth
or serial cable.

They are just plain MIDI files, yes. Have a search on the web, there are
plenty of applications of various types that allow you to create your own
MIDI files. A basic "MIDI sequencer" for example would let you do this. To
get anything satisfactory, expect to spend some time learning the software
(you will need some basic knowledge of music too....).
Probably easier just to download ready-made files (again, just search for
MIDI files on the web) unless you are interested in the music side of things
already, in which case you might well find it rewarding.
