upgrading firmware for t610

I have an old ver of firmware for this phone and want to get it upgraded,
spoe to a service center who said that they can do it but i will loose all
my settings including phone book etc.. Other posts i have read here seem to
say that all this information will be retained, what is the truth will i
loose all my information i have stored on the phone since purchase

When I took mine in to go from R1x to R4, they said that I
*might* lose some data. I had it all backed up anyway, but
when I picked the phone up an hour later, everything was
intact. I have heard that if you're having the phone de-
branded at the same time, then you will lose information.

Correct. If they flash the GDFS part (there's the information that providers
put in, like logo's and menu's, but it also contains your personal stuff)
everything is gone.
