I can't find an easy way to do this, and searching the net doesn't give a
conclusive answer (some states that it is possible, some that is isn't). I
already bought the cable and it would be a shame if I can't use it...
If it indeed isn't possible, what to go for: IR or Bluetooth? Is there
something else you can't do with either of those (sorry for the tone here,
but I find it so stupid to no allowing picture transfer through USB, if that
is the case). And perhaps even recommendation for which HW to buy (PC, not a
laptop so no built-in BT or IR).
(Emailing the pictures is not what I'm looking for... :-) .)

Seems I found the answer (assuming that the "Solution finder" at the
SonyEricsson website is correct):
No!
FWIW, here is what it came up with:
"You can send images from mobile to PC via IrDA-Infrared but not via Data
Cable. The OS Windows? 2000 and Windows? XP support the image transfer using
the IrTrans-Protocol (Infrared connection).
The mobile phone supports IrTrans-Protocol, too.
The SW Image Editor can send pictures only in one direction (PC to mobile
phone).
It is also possible to send pictures from mobile to PC via Bluetooth, but
only if the PC Bluetooth-Adapter supports the Bluetooth OBEX Object Push
Profile."

FWIW again:
Bought an MSI USB Bluetooth adapter (MyCom at PUB in Stockholm) for the same
price as the USB cable. Works great!
