T616 firmware upgrade - what it does

I got the T616 from Cingular. I'm thinking of upgrading this phone to
the latest firmware. I'm not sure what that does and I can't seem to
find the info on any search engines.

What I want is to get rid of all the Cingular logos, music, and pretty
much everything related to Cingular. I want to free up more memory so
I can store more pictures. I would also want to add a few games to my
phone, does upgrading firmware add any games? The only games I get is
Q-bert and Mini-golf.

I never use the internet option, is there any way to disable it?
Everytime I press the wrong button on my phone, the darn things dials
up to the internet. Even though it fails to connect, it's just
annoying.

Is there any way to re-assign joystick keys? Let's say, the "up" key
to activate calculator, the "down" key to activate inbox, the "left"
key to write mail, the "right" key to bring up my list of contacts.

The latest firmware is R1b027 I think. If you just got the phone and bought
it new, you should have it. Press >*<<*<* and look at the software
information. It will be r1b027 (not sure about last three digits, but
r1bxxx) or r1a054) THe biggest gain from the firmware is improved RF and
faster java. Some people I know who checked the RF difference ona meter
actually gauged a 7-9db gain from the firmware upgrade. That is a TON.

Check Globalmobility. They are a very reasonably priced and respected
authority on flashing the T616. They can also debrand the phone (get rid of
the Cingular customized firmware).

Simply upgrading the firmware doesn't, but you can get tons of games at
http://www.myt610.net/

None that I know of

The only one customizable is the left key. It corresponds to whatever you
have listed first in your shortcut menu.
