First shoot yourself in the head. Then shoot someone at Ericsson :-)

I had a similar problem that may have some bearing on yours.
Specifically, my P800 worked fine with a Dell Precision 210 running
Windows 2000, but not with a new Compaq Evo running Windows XP that my
company gave me as an upgrade. I tried updating PC-Suite and XP
software a number of times without success. Sony Ericsson support were
completely clueless.
Then, a couple of months ago, I lost my P800.[*] I bought a new one.
It came with a new SyncStation. Lo and behold, this one WORKS with my
Evo running XP! And guess what -- the Syncstation models are slightly
different! So it may be a hardware (or driver) problem.
The model that DOES work with XP has this label: "KRY 105 189 R1A,
DSS-20, Type 4040034B, N173, 03W10"
The model that DOES NOT work with WinXP has the following label: "KRY
105 183 R1B, Type 4040034, N173, 03W01".
I provided this info to SonyEricsson in the hope that it would help some
other poor sod, although I'm not surprised that it hasn't made it out
anywhere else. Hopefully this will give you some leads.
good luck,

[*] It never occurred to me to wonder what kind of sound a man would
make if, while exiting his vehicle, his expensive, two-week-old
smartphone should choose to escape his coat pocket, clatter against the
cold iron grate of the storm drain at his feet, and -- liquid-crystal
display twinkling benignly all the while -- plummet two meters into icy
sewer water, vanishing forever. But now I know.

I have the latter, except it's 03W03 instead of 03W01, and it works fine with
Windows XP.
