New P910 a reality?

Rapiblue - 07 Jul 2004 22:51 GMT Hi. I am supposed to get a P900 on my contract upgrade next month, but I got a phone call from the manageress at a cellphone store here in South Africa, she told me that she got a fax from her head-office saying that they're releasing the P910 in October and the P900 will be discontinued. Am I just slow, or has SonyEricsson already released the P910? I've done searches online for it, and by the looks of it, it isn't official yet. Now how can a service provider (especially in South Africa) already be saying that they're getting it in October? Anyone that can share some info here please? I'll definitely be going to the manageress tomorrow to see the fax for myself. TIA. Rapidblue.

I guess you've probably seen this stuff:

BTW, who's your provider in SA? I'll be visiting Cape Town in August, and was wondering if GPRS and MMS was supported there...
Thanks,
Andrew
Rapiblue - 08 Jul 2004 19:09 GMT Thanx Andrew.
Still quite funny how the distributors are so certain that it's being released in October and all I can find on the net is speculation that it might be released. Don't know how the distributors came up with a date, but anyway.
We have 3 networks here in South Africa - VodaCom (the best and most popular, which I use), MTN and Cell-C. I know for a fact that GPRS and MMS are available on VodaCom and MTN. I'm not that clued up with Cell-C though - they're pretty new (and useless, if I might add).
I hope you enjoy your stay here :-)
Rapidblue.

OK, I'll be sure to use VodaCom when I'm down there -- too bad that Fido, my Canadian provider, has no GPRS or MMS agreements with anyof the SA providers :-(
Thanks for the info, though!

Never bought the 900 as Contacts restricted to just 3 numbers as I understand it - heck I've got more than that on my T98. My Organiser has people with a dozen numbers, plus four addresses and all sorts of other details (Notes) and any attempt for a phone to be also a PDA will need to replicate that (a bit like the early Nok 9000s)

You can have a ton of different numbers for each entry (when you *seem* to run out, you just add more) , with descriptions (fax, home, mobile, work, etc), plus detailed address (street address, postal code, area, city, country), and all this twice - one for the person's personal details and one for their work. And if you still need more, there's the notes page on each entry, where you can store any additional information you want - plus a page for images.
If that was the only reason you never bought the P900, I think you 've been missing out too long !

I must have made a serious error reading Ericsson's website where they said "The advanced Sony Ericsson Phonebook - Contacts. You can store three phone numbers for each contact - home, work and mobile. You can also add their company name, title and email address. The perfect phone book."
I didn't investigate further for a number of reasons. Lack of keyboard, no easy upgrade from current PDA, quite frankly I'd prefer a phone Without a camera, and I'd prefer CF add-on ability rather than just Mem Stick (as I have abunch of CF cards). It seemed best to wait and see what came along further on in time and in the meantime perservere with my T68 + MC218.
Maybe will look at 910 in a few months when can get one to play with. We all live in hope.

Glad I could be of help. If you 're looking for something to take advantage of your CF cards, you may want to look elsewhere though. Because, the way I understand the business world (ok, it doesn't take a rocket scientist !) no product with the word "Sony" in its name ("SonyEricsson") will ever use anything other than memory sticks for storage/memory expansion. It's a shame though, and I 'd still recommend test-driving the P910 when it arrives later this year, as this will also have a thumb QWERTY keyboard.
However it goes, good luck in your next phone/PDA choice.

The Shadow - 29 Sep 2004 21:16 GMT 910 is out. And sadly, the additional phone and email fields are NOT synced. This has the effect, unless I'm mistaken, of making it impossible to properly sync on two different PCs.
