Sony Ericsson T637 scratching easily?

I almost feel silly about worrying about this - after all its only a cell
phone.  But has anyone noticed that this or other SE cell phones scratch
easily?  I've had my T637 for 3 weeks and already I've got some pretty
serious scratches on the screen.  It there anyway to replace this?  I think
the different faceplates you buy do not replace the screen.  My Nokia phone
that I had for a year and a half isn't even as scratched as my SE T637 is
within a few weeks.

Thanks!

I have noticed the exact same thing with my T616. I put a PDA sheet over it
for a while but then took it off. It managed to get scratched anyway.

A little frustrating when you like to keep your stuff nice.

I have the same problem with my t637, but mine had a big scratch the second
day I got it.   I was pissed.   So yes they do seem to get scratched easily.
I've seen OEM faceplates on ebay for around 10.00 US.

Another option is a product called Displex that I found web searching ideas
to fix the scratch.   This stuff works great and it also took the nicks out
of my wrist watch.    Just don't rub this stuff too hard.   try a couple of
light applications and you'll be fine.

here's the link:    http://www.displex.de/

Good luck

Well, good to know I wasn't the only one.  I know in 6 months I won't even
care, but damn, such big scratches so soon.

Thanks for the link to displex.  I'll definitely check it out.

Do the OEM faceplates replace the screen, too?  Or just the black plastic
casing?

Watch out, they charge you a fortune for a tiny portion of this stuff. A
real rip off! You'll be as fine with visor polish from any motorcycle
shop for a fraction of the price. If you don't mind the smelling you can
even polish the disply with tooth paste....:-)

Cheers,
Horst

Those inexpensive scratched-CD repair kits, are very good on mobile phone
screens as well.

Maybe for light scratches, but the CD stuff didn't work for me.

I don't really know.   If I do end up buying a new faceplate on ebay.....I
will ask the seller before I buy.

I have bought several OEM faceplates on ebay. They all come with a back
plate, a part to cover the area around the camera, keypad, and a faceplate.
The faceplate has a new clear window to cover the LCD sceen on your phone. I
have a T616 and have got a couple different covers. Once one gets real
scratched up, I buy a new one, usually a new color to try it out. It usually
ends up being like $5-10 for the faceplates. Make sure you get a Torx
screwdriver for it too, usually the ebay seller will offer one to add or try
a hardware store. Some stores like Radiosuck and Lowe's and Home Depot will
not carry the right size (T6) screwdriver for it. I got mine in a 6 pack at
Harbor Freight for like $5. Changing the face plate isnt difficutl either.
Dont lose any screws, try not to touch the screen surface w/ the faceplate
off, and use a can of Dust Off or compressed air to clean out the phone as
well.

That's awesome info.  Thanks much.  I checked out Ebay and they have some
cool faceplates.  The shiny silver one looks neat, but I bet it fingerprints
up like a bi*ch.

Be warned that the fit and finish of cheap aftermarket faceplates can be poor.

The fact is that the T637 was not designed to accommodate user-swappable
covers so you may void your warranty by taking your phone apart.  Removing
the antenna cover portion of the housing can be a tricky and delicate job.
Only undertake this task if you are confident in your ability to tinker with
small electronics. You might want to consider wearing a grounding strap on
your wrist.  And working with at least one foot in a bucket of water will
render you doubly static resistant.  Good luck.

Speaking of such things. what exactly will void the warranty? I just sent my
phone in because the joystick and powerbuttons stopped functioning good.
they ask the obvious questions of was the phone dropped or get wet and that
was a NO. so just by taking the phone apart and persay temporarily changing
the faceplate void warranty?

Yes, there is.  The bezel covering the screen on the T637 is held in place
by a sticky strips that do not harden. One strip is located along the top of
the phone and the other is just under the joystick surround.  The bezel
covers the screen and extends from covering the joystick to just above the
earspeaker horizontal slit.  You can run your thumbnail around this bezel as
their is a groove around its perimeter.
By digging your thumbnail under the bottom of  the bezel that surrounds the
joystick and prying u,p you can remove the bezel which includes the outer
plastic screen covering.  The screen underneath can be cleaned as well as
the underside of the protector panel.  The bezel can then be placed back on
the phone (as the sticky strips will remain sticky) or you can  replace the
bezel with a new one extracted from another front cover.  The bezel is not
offered separately, AFAIK, but is considered part of the front housing even
though the screen bezel is merely stuck on to the front housing with the
sticky strips.  In effect, they work like velcro.

I highly discourage changing anything on the Sony Ericsson T637. I
owned one. I payed 150$ for it from ATT Wireless. I owned it 3 months
before I was forced to trash it.

Story goes as such. I got bored with its OEM casing and wanted to
replace it. I went on ebay, found a chrome face plate set, So I
purchased it. It arrived, I changed it out with the use of a starfish
screwdriver. I cannot remember if I lost one of the screws when I
changed it out, or if I lost it later somehow. So anyway, it worked
fine at first for the beginning couple of weeks, maybe even one month.
Then.. I finally noticed that the lower left side of the phone
(looking at it from forward aspect) was somewhat loose and would creak
when squeezed. I then realized I was missing a screw.Another week
later and my signal became low, my text message sending became NO text
msg sending. When I spoke with ppl they often either did not hear me
at all or simply were dropped.

I called ATTWS first about all this not realizing that somehow,
maybe.. since the casing was not tight that debris may've gotten in
there, or maybe just the wind blowing would be the reason my signal
and phone abilities degraded so badly. At the time I even had complete
equipment coverage on the device. ATTWS informed me that due to my
modifying the device, the insurance company "lock/line" would do
nothing for me. So then I went on to see if I could find a screw for
my phone, I found one.. I set it in, it held it tight as it should've,
but the TXT msg'ing still would refuse to function, msg's would NOT be
sent out neither recieved.

I then changed the chrome plates out back to the original manufacturer
SE plates, the static and dropped calls went down, but still existed
and SMS still did not function whatsoever. I suppose I could've given
it a shot at sending it in to SE with the OEM parts on it and hope
they'd fix it.. but I'm the type that'll take a loss if I produced the
effect for myself rather than lie.. so I had no choice but to throw it
out.

As another post in this thread mentioned, this phone is NOT for
modifying.

Here's to show you how delicate this device is.. after ATTWS turned me
down, I stopped in at a mall cell phone wagon (big mistake (I
should've known it)) - this high school kid - big talker, said he'd be
able to change the plate out to a different type which is a diff
plastic which may then allow me to have less static in the phone (at
that point I was desperate, I did not want to buy another new phone)
so i let him at it.. as he was taking it apart I heard him mumble to
his buddy "man i've never even taken these apart before".. at which
point I became nervous - but I let him continue (why? I don't know..)
so eventually he puts on the new plates, which then my joystick ceases
to function entirely and the phone won't stay on. Then he hands it to
me, and goes to help "other customers" - so I figure ok.. fine.. I've
had enough, I then proceed to take the plate off - and little did I
know, that if you pull hard enough and if the plate is stick to the
screen well enough that the Screen will simply come off right with it.
Which is what happend. So, there you are.

I now do NOT modify any type of SE phone or any other phone that is
tiny, and as obviously sensitive as the SEt637 is.

I'm sticking with good ole Nokia 6200's and I may change the faceplate
on my 6620.

If you have a SEt637 don't do it!
Be smart about it, I wasn't...
