Problems with a K800i

I start this topic in the hope that someone out there could give me a clue
about what's going on. I bought 2 Sonny Ericssons, a k810 for myself and a
k800 for my brother, a couple of weeks ago. The Problem is about the k800. It
doesn't  receive calls. The settings are ok, haven't changed anything in it,
the calls are not diverted or something like that. The antenna is not broken
and I'm reluctant to think that there is a hardware problem with it. If I
call from the k800 the call is successful and afterwards it can receive calls.
It is strange, I know. And this thing happens every day. During the night
something happens, don;t know what ( and don't start making jokes on this
thing, I'm trying to explain it the best way I can), and the next morning or
so the hole deal happens again. If I want to call the k800 I have to make a
call from it to another contact, and then I can use it for the rest of the
day. Do you guys have any idea what can be the problem?
I have contacted the retailer in my city and went over there to let them
have a look at it, but they don;t have the equipment. They said it's probably
the software, could this be right? The phone is brand new and it hasn't been
dropped or 'hurt' in any way, and no changes to the software were made. Could
you guys help with an explanation?
Thanks!

It's difficult to say whether there's a hardware or a firmware
problem.

Have you tried swapping SIMs to see if the problem follows the
phone or the SIM?  I expect it'll follow the phone, but we're
guessing more until we know for sure.

It sounds like a problem with the T3212 location update timer,
which periodically says "here I am" to the network.  If the
network doesn't get a fresh update within the period it
specifies (T3212 is a parameter broadcast by the network), then
the network marks the number as absent.

Is the phone just being kept somewhere overnight where there's
no signal?  It should quickly recover from that situation,
however.

Yes Sir, I have tried everything, swapped 3 sims , it acted the same way. So
about that protocol, is it software or hardware related? The retailer told me
it could be software it has r1gj001 and the k810 has the latest r1kg001, so
I'm guessing that it might be the software to blame. Have to take it to the
repair shop but they'll hold it for like 3 weeks and that's a long time for
me , because for how much I payed for the phone they should deal with it
quickly, but yet, this depends on them, and the repair center is 120 km away,
they don;t do it on the spot.  The T3212 location tiemr, is it hardware or
software?

What you're calling "software", I've been calling "firmware".
Where a handset is concerned, they're really just different
names for the same thing.  Loosely speaking, it gets called
firmware because it's difficult to change.

Implementation of location updates involves both hardware and
firmware, but I'd expect a fault affecting just location
updates to be purely a firmware problem.

Even if it's not a T3212 timer issue, I'd still guess at it
being a firmware problem of some sort, given your description.
As is sometimes the case, there may be some network
configuration or timing anomaly (maybe distance related) in
your area which is exposing something not quite right in your
firmware.

Thank you a lot Mr Henderson, I'm going to take the phone to the Germanos
shop, and hopefully they will be able to fix it, either with a software
update, or something else. Would an update with the latest firmware resolve
the problem? As I said I have a k810 with the latest firmware and from what I
know the hardware of k810 and k800 is jsut the same so an update should solve
this. Thanks a lot !

Can you not update the firmware yourself via SE's web site?

They said it cancels my warranty, and I could get the damn SEUS to work. Said
somethign about macromedia flash, I got that and it still doesn;t work.

There's no certainty about that.  There's a significant amount
of guesswork going on about the exact nature of the problem.
But a firmware upgrade is certainly the next logical step to
take.

I hope you're right.  Are you able to contact Ericsson customer
support directly for an opinion on both the fault and the
possibility of your doing your own firmware upgrade without
voiding warranty?  In any case, I'd be expecting a replacement
phone if the latest firmware doesn't fix the problem.

I live in Romania and as part of EU I am entitled to a replacement, but I
think I'll let them upgrade the firmware, I think if they mess up they have
to take th heat and there will be no doubt whose fault it was. I read a lot
of materials on teh internet about dead SE's, people tried to update their
phones and they ended up with them dead. THey said it should take even a
month until it comes back. I am not so happy with this but I have to do it. I
bought the phone as a present, and at the shop I noticed no problems. Mine,
the k810 is working fine, but I'm down because of the k800. The price isn't
correct refered tot eh trouble this malfunction si causing. I'm regretting I
bought the phone, yet I have not noticed other information regarding this
kind o problem. Isolated case, or just bad luck that this phone was sold
broken? Nobody can tell, but I thank you very much for your help, it
reassured me that it might be the firmware /or even the hardware. Once sent
to the service, ( I really hope they will know what to do , and not destroy
the phone themselves and let me take the blame-it is typical or some bad
intentioned service  stations to blame the user for the malfunction, which is
not the case for me). Hole they don;t screw me up! Thanks !
