Might get a bit expensive but you can set your
email program to forward a copy of all your
incoming emails to your fido phone number:
areacode+number@fido.ca
If the mail is longer than the 150/160
character SMS limit, it just gets cut off.

You could also get shaw to forward the email so you don't have to
leave your email program running.
I believe it's an option under manage.shaw.ca

Now, can anyone tell me if there's a way to download the whole email
over the phone (either on the phone itself or to a pda). Shaw doesn't
seem to allow remote access to their pop3 server.

Nope. No pop3 server, many are looking for a solution, there may be a
solution, but you'll have to pay:

What I have done is find a pop3 enabled service (eg. yahoo email address)
and forward the shawmail to this address AND then check from the device
(terminal device of whatever kind that supports pop3 setup). Cumbersome, but
it works :)
