Hi,
It will make a full year that I've been having fun with my first-generation
HipTop (well; obviously I'm currently not using the very first one I had...
I got to change it twice, which is half less than my previous T200 in half
the time :( ); and for a couple of months I started to be very fond of
buying an HT2.
Yes it's expensive, and yes it's about the same thing, but it's less huge
and more practicle (let's say, the engineers did their jobs better).
My concern is, should I buy one off ebay (T-Mobile branded), would it work
on Fido's network (not sim/GSM compatibility concern here); but will it work
on the exisiting HT1 infrasctructure (fidohiptop.ca infrastructure with
Danger's servers) ? Does it work exactly the same way, could I use my
existing Hiptop profile on it ?
I know that currently on HT1 Fido uses the OS 1.3; and that this might get
me into trouble with a HT2 since it uses a OS starting with 2; and since
they don't currently sell HT2; they might not carry the tolerance of OS2 on
their net, and they might ask for me "upgrading" to os1.3 (unless engineers
thought of that(can't upgrade to a lower version)). (Basically over here
what I meant is will the OS on it run seamlessly over the present OTA's
installation)
I believe that if Fido is to sell HT2 in the near-future (as of late jan or
feb) they _must_ be testing it right now (which would mean that HT2 would be
supported on the net with its os); They would not just sell it without
months of intense testing/debugging, unless Dangers guarantees them that
there so not enough changes from HT1'soft that there are no worries; right ?
Also, if anyone knows about Fido and HT2 in terms of date or anything, give
me a buzz; thos techs over phone support don't know/ want to share the info.
(My friend relatively "harrassed" them last week, he called 3 times begging
to buy an HT2, he got to talk to a "superior" who told him that they didn't
carry it/plan to/didn't know when, which might not be false at all actually,
but what do you know)
Anyways, thanks for any info;
pmb

Can Hiphops be locked to a network ? I'd be weary of buying a unit branded to
a specific network.

You best bet would be to contact Danger directly. In terms of general
connectivity, GSM/GPRS should be no different. What applications on the hiphop
are Danger specific enough to require a danger-specific host on the Fido side ?
For WAP, Fido has a generic WML/WAP gateway. If the hiphop uses a newer
version of the WML specs, then Fido would probably have to have some entry in
its WAP gateway to equate your phone type with a WML spec (DTD) so it knows
what to feed your phone. (remember that the gateway does a lot of work on
behalf of your phone, including generating and sending the HTTP request to
remote servers, and those requests include the type of WAP browser you have.

Does Rogers support Hiphop ? From now on, interoperability between the two
networks will become important, at least in areas wherte microcell
infrastructure is expected to remain long enough.

They are not given the info until the day a product is announced. They may
hear rumours around the office, but that is the extent of it.
wait a few months
