hi there
i keep meaning to ask this question.... every time I get an SMS message on
my Fido phone (an ericsson t28w), i can't tell who sent it to me - the
From field is a mix of characters....
is this the standard way for Fido? is it because a non-Fido user is
sending me the message? or is it a problem with my phone? if i SMS to
myself, i see my phone number in the "from field".... thats the only time
the field makes sense.... its most annoying - i can't even do a straight
reply.
thanks for tips/words....

I have noticed that various Ericsson phones seem to display garbage
characters for the from number when SMS arrives from a different carrier.
Those same messages arriving on a Nokia phone always display the correct
number.
My wife still uses an Ericsson T18z on Fido, and if I send her a message
from my Rogers pre-paid phone the ORIGIN displays as rubbish characters. If
I send a message from my Rogers phone to my Nokia 6310i on Fido (same
network as my wife) then the ORIGIN is correctly displayed.
I've never seen this phenomenon on ANY OTHER make of phone.

I have an Ericsson R520m and it does the same thing - displays garbage
text in the 'from' field when it should display a phone number. I'm on
Fido and this happens whenever the SMS comes from a non-Fido network.

Earlier Ericsson phones don't display sender information for text messages
coming from the inter-carrier gateway properly. I have yet to see any
practical solution to this problem (aside from the obvious, change phone!
hehe).

It must be an "Ericsson thing", because my wife's old T18z ALSO shows
garbage characters in the FROM field when she receives cross-network SMS.
