I was wondering what steps are necessary to use an unlocked phone on
the Fido network.  Thanks in advance.

1) Insert your Fido GSM into the phone.
2) Turn the phone on.

"The same thing we do every night Steve. Try to take over the world!"

You forgot 1 important instruction... make sure that the GSM phone that you
have which is unlocked covers the Fido or Rogers GSM band.

And make sure the phone is charged, and make sure it's actually
unlocked, and make sure you have coverage...

That's a given :)

They say you shouldn't say anything about the dead unless it's good.

"He's dead. Good."

No steps are necessary.  Put the SIM in it and go.  Only possible
thing you might have to do is if you want to run data you may have to
enter the data settings (or have thems sent to you from the
manufacturer.)

Some phones (probably most) require a further level of unlocking to support
this because the commands to adjust the data settings are disabled.

For voice, as long as the phone supports GSM 850 and/or GSM 1900 (ideally
both), it will work just fine.
