My statement seems to indicate that you can opt out of the name display
while keeping the number display. I called Fido and the CSR that I spoke
with seems to indicate that I need to opt out of both. The exact paragraph
says "If you don't want your name and number to be displayed, press #31#,
free of chrage, before each phone number. Or, to permanently block your name
from appearing call 611 free of charge from your Fido or 1 888 481-FIDO
(3436)." I also don't mind my number being displayed but I don't want my
name to be displayed. I'm wondering if my Fido phone's menu option of "block
callerID / number" will also block my name. I guess I'll see in May. Fido is
giving Name Display for free fotr 30 days as of May 2006. A good thing about
the way that they are doing this is that Fido is not going for a "negative
billing" where if you don't call to tell them that you don't want the
service, you automatically get it. Fido will automatically deactivate your
service if they don't receive a call from you telling them that you want to
keep the service (and pay for it of course).

This blocks your number from being sent, which prevents the receiving
telco from doing the name inquiry.

BTW, the 4 legged furry CSR could not confirm the dates. Just that this
would be enabled "sometime during May".
I wonder if this is a feature that is primarily being enabled for
Roger's service with Fido tagging along because it doesn't have much choice.
More importantly, when roaming in the USA or elsewhere, will name
display function for incomimg calls ?
(And if an american travels to Canada, will his handset automatically
show celler's name ?)

Rogers got burned badly when it tried a negative billing for its cable
service, enough that it had made the national news. So I suspect they
will now be very careful about avoiding negative billing.

Yep, same result here (via email). Glad I live in Telus-land,
where they don't currently support Name Display.
Hmm, maybe I should just change the registered name on
my account to Fido : ).

I think you're confusing a couple of things.
Fido / Rogers has sold / given their database of names and numbers to
Bell / the world so that a query for a name on a Fido number will
result in a name for any caller ID subscriber for any telco. It is
highly unlikely that you can block your name unless you block your
number. I'm not aware of any protocol in the system that would allow
that kind of choice by the caller.
In addition, it sounds like they are now going to provide display of
the names of parties calling you to be available on your handset. This
you will have subscribe to for a fee. Whether they allow number or
number / name caller ID as an option / super-option is a matter of
policy. They may designate caller ID as number / name consolidated
feature.

Highly unlikely to be that case. Giving away their customer database is
unthinkable. What is more likely is that they opened their systems for
telephone signaling level inquiries just as is the case for current
caller/id/caller's name resolution.

Actually, when I was with Bell landline (I've since dropped them), my home
number would be displayed but my name would not be displayed. It has been
awhile but I believe that when I called people from my old Bell landline
phone, it used to say "Private Name" or "Unknown Name" while it still
displayed my number so I believe that it is possible. Also, with Bell
landline, there are some people who subscribe to Call Display and others
that subscribe to Call Display with Name so it is possible to send only the
number without sending the name (or maybe I'm mistaken). Finally, if you
read what Fido wrote on their monthly statements (at least what they wrote
on mine), they seem to indicate that not displaying the name was possible by
calling Fido and speaking with a CSR.

Tip from Howard Forums user:
- block all call/name display on your phone settings
- add *31# in front of the numbers saved on phone
Result: only numbers stored on your phone will be
sent your name/number when calling.
It's not what I would like to do but preferable to having
my name showing up everywhere.
