No, that would be me. Sorry about my crappy posting name.

The Treo can do a GPRS connect with wap.fido.ca and mms.fido.ca no problem.
I have sent pictures successfully this way, so it's not just an illusion.
But an internet.fido.ca connection fails, with the log ending with:
PAP<-Ack
PAP Up
IPCP->CfgReq
LCP<-TrmReq
LCP->TrmAck
LCP Timeout
My account (2002, prepaid) also predates the Rogers takeover.
I was using a Siemens M55 successfully with WAP then.

The last furryguy I talked to said that everything is enabled on my account,
and that I should go to their store at the Toronto Eaton Centre to figure
out why it's not working. Well, wap.fido.ca and mms.fido.ca connect but
internet.fido.ca doesn't so I don't know what more to say.
Frustrating stuff. GSM phones are capable of so much, but they're always
crippled somehow here in Canada.

Prepaid no longer allows real internet connection.

That 4 legged furry guy should read the fine print. The prepaid gprs
plans have been crippled down to Rogers' standards.

Note that this is also common on USA networks which also cripple their
prepaid offerings. I think Cingular (now back to the AT&T name) allows
users to cheat and enter an unpublished (by them) APN for prepaid access
to the internet.

Well, I got WAP (via wap.fido.ca as the APN) working on it now.
I had to set the proxy port to 8080 rather than 9201 as they told me.
Go figure.
So that gets web browsing working which should be adequate.
At 5c/kB, I wouldn't want to do much of it though...

I swapped in a prepaid Belgian SIM a few years back when I was in Europe.
Notable differences in behaviour:
- Free incoming calls
- Per second billing
- The account money expires after 12 MONTHS rather than the lame
30 days or whatever
- After making a call, the call cost and balance is automatically
displayed on the phone status line. No arguing with
that bitchy Andrea!
- Roaming works everywhere, even here in Canada (I tried).
- Voicemail calls are free
Generally a class act.
I'm not sure what you're referring to since I'm not "Some Other Guy". My
GPRS has been working fine on my Treo 600, Treo 650, and Treo 680 without
any issues. My GPRS set-up probably also predates Rogers purchase because I
have the unlimited package (subject to their 1GB fair use guidelines).
On my Treos, I use the connection type of "GPRS", User Name is "fido",
password I think is "fido" also but it is hidden, the APN is
internet.fido.ca. IP address is set for Automatic and Query DNS is enabled.
I use to have a fido proxy enabled but now I don't.
With these settings, I can get my Gmail (which I believe that I've set up to
use pop/smtp). I can also browse the web (port 80), synchronize to an NTP
(port 123), ftp, etc.

Well that seals it then. I've used exactly the same settings and the
connection fails, while it works with wap.fido.ca as the APN. It must
be because I'm on prepaid (pre-Rogers), even though the CSRs claim they
"enabled" full internet access.
The SIM card is an old M32 model, but I can't imagine that'd matter.
Beats me why they don't allow it. It's prepaid and it'd drain the account
at an astounding rate, which you'd think they'd want. Bummer, since I
wanted to try the PalmOS google maps.
I guess I'm stuck with WAP then.

Google Maps is amazing on my Treo 680! It was also amazing on my Treo 650
before I sold it. I haven't ever tried it on my old Treo 600 since I sold my
Treo 600 before Google released it. Those settings have always worked for me
with Fido on my unlocked Treos.
I'm not sure what SIM card I'm using. It has been the same Fido SIM card
that I've had since first becoming a Fido customer over 8 years ago.

If you are still having issues, please feel free to drop by the fido
service centre, if we can program it, then all it will cost you is a
$15 internet settings fee paid for in-store.
