I noticed at the VTech warehouse today (Richmond) that they are
selling a cordless/cellular phone system which lets you plug in the
VTech A700 cell phone at the base station and then use the cellular
line from the cordless handsets. This is similar to the CellSocket
device for the Nokia phones that someone else mentioned, and ideal for
the CityFido service if you want to use it with multiple regular
phones around the house. The VTech system includes the base station
and 2 cordless handsets for $199.

Am I correct to assume that these devices work without the need for the
landline service to be active?  I hate to carry the cell around or run to it
when I'm in another room.  So one of these would be perfect when I'm home.
How's the sound quality on these thing?  Can the phone be charged while
plugged into one of these?

With the VTech system there's a pair of buttons on the cordless
handsets to select "Cell" or "Line". Presumably you don't need to have
a land line - you can just use the cellular connection as long as the
cell phone is plugged into the base station. The VTech base station
has a specific docking port for the A700 which connects to the
interface slot on the bottom of the cell phone. I would guess that it
includes charging, but I haven't tried it. The cordless phone side of
the system appears to be the regular VTech 2.4 GHz DSS system, which
has good sound quality and range.
