Roger's "Fido" deal

I'm thinking of going for this (I was planning to switch anyways, this is
just a cheaper way of doing it). Was wondering about a few things though,
I've checked their site and tried to go to a store but got no useful info
from either:

If you're Fido prepaid is that enough?
Any limit on the phone? I've got a CA638 lying in the closet?
What do you have to sign up for at Rogers, do you have to sign up for a post
paid plan?
If you do have to sign up for a post paid plan what is the cost of switching
to pay as you go? (if any)
What phone do they give you for free? I don't really care, I've already got
a phone, but heck, if they're going to give me a phone why not at least know
which one.

Thanks for any info. TTYL

postpaid plans only.

They'll grandfather your current Fido plan. And you don't want an AT&T plan
since it is far mre expensive than Fido plans (billed by second, contracts etc)

Your Fido phone, unless unlocked, will not work with an AT&T SIM card.
(assuming AT&T gives you a GSM phone and not an old TDMA one).

If you were thinking of switching to AT&T, but would rather take AT&T's offer
to emulate Fido, then it really means that you prefer Fido. Otherwise, you'd
switch to a published and advertised AT&T rate plan.

And if you do switch, don't forget to ask the AT&T rep how long they garantee
you will have the Fido rates, and what happens if you want to make a change ?
Will they allow you to switch to another Fido-emulated package or will they
force you onto a AT&T package the minute you want to make a tiny change ?

Until AT&T and Telus and Bell start to offer decent rates, per second billing
, no contracts in their advertised packages, then I wouldn't give them my business.

Now, if Fido could return the answer-to-end billing...

That's fine, will be cancelling that one soon.

Any requirement for staying on it? Can you move to pay as you go the
next day?

   It is unlocked.

Correct, I would be switching to a published AT&T plan, this "deal" lets
me get a SIM and phone for free. FWIW I'm switching from Fido since the
building I now work in has Telus,  Bell and Rogers repeaters, but no Fido,
so Fido is useless to me (more so).

No problem, won't be on a post paid plan with them anyways. My usage is
rather low.

As long as Fido has coverage of where you are, personally it's rare for
my phone to GET coverage during the course of a day.

Few consumers know enough to understand the benefits so I don't see that
happening any time soon.

They don't know because Fido never capiotalized on its asset. Just like it
denied having DATA services years before all others, and only reluctantly
admitted to it after all the other announced theirs.

But consider current ads where Fido has no problem flaunting its per-second
billing. They could simply add "and we only start to charge you when the phone
answers, not when you start dialing" and that would be a great marketing thing.

I really don't think that send-to-end generated significant revenus for Fido,
at least not for postpaid customers.

Who cares about the answer-to-end with what was released in Vancouver and
coming in other cities soon? lol.

As has been mentioned here that plan is useless to some of us. I for one
have DSL, cable is not an option, therefore I have no choice but to keep a
land line. TTYL

You have a cell and a land line right now, don't you?  You don't NEED to get
rid of your land line to get CityFido.  Just pay the few extra dollars per
month and get it.

I pay $10 a month for cell, that's how much I use it, so it's not a few
extra dollars. I use my land line whenever possible. TTYL

Went to a rogers dealer today.
Here is what they need/offer:
-Must bring current fido invoice OR hardware (Phone&SIM which they will
keep)
-Choose between Nokia 3595 or Siemens C56 for free.
-Sign 6 month contract and get 6 month unlimited calling.
-No contract is an option.
-You can cancel after 6 month in first case.
-If you want to migrate ti Paygo they will charge you $50 fee.
-They will not match your current fido plan
-There is a $35 activation fee.
-You pay nothing in the store:-)

If I choose this option what does it get me?

Wow, what a deal, so you end up paying MORE then if I just went in to
get a SIM... guess I won't be taking THAT route! :) Thanks for the info.

A free phone and month to month contract. Never been on rogers, but I
believe they need 30 days notice to cancel. Make sure you read the contract
before you sign it. When I asked "When can I cancel?", they said 6 month,
refering to 6 month unlimited calling option/contract.

Deal is actually quite tempting.
But if you want just Paygo, you can buy SIM on ebay and activate on Paygo.
Activation is free.

Hmm, so basically, for $35 I'm getting a 3595 with Rogers? Actually
that's not so bad, I want a phone with 850 coverage for times I'm out of
1900 coverage so that might be worth it. I can buy a sim for less the $50 so
I guess I'll just throw it out.

I'll see if I can pop in to a Rogers store sometime to clarify a few
more outstanding questions. Thanks for the info. TTYL

Thanks for the info.  I guess it is not really worth it to
go for this deal just to get the 3595, cancel, unlock it,
and use it with fido.

 $35 activation fee
+ $25 for new Fido SIM
+ $?? for old crappy Fido phone to trade in

hmm, maybe okay if you just get the phone and not
activate it, saving $35 : ).  i don't have any
dead Fido SIMs lying around : ).

I just called up rogers about fido deal and they told me if I want 6 months
unlimited calling, I need to sign a 2 year contract.
What's up with this?

Thanks

Well, that's Rogers:-)
I spoked to CS, here is the official offer:
-Free (must have 850 band) phone on month to month contract, choose any
published rogers plan
-1 year contract gets you 3 month unlimited local calling, 2 year gets you 6
-Minimum 1 year contract required to get MaxAir plan ($25-100/1000 or
$30-150/unLtd E/W)

But as CSR said if the store offers you better deal, take it (dealer may
sell for less), but make sure that it's written on the contract.

Store I've been to offered me 6 month unlimited, 6 month agreement.
