"It's time to switch from Fido to a much bigger backyard."

So reads the advertisement in this morning paper.

Another sheep by the name of BM is not far behind.

When Rogers and Telus go on the attack, you know they're not happy
campers.  CityFido is probably stirring up a lot of crap for them,
even if people aren't switching from Telus/Rogers to Fido, they're
certainly demanding the same unlimited for $40 as Fido is offering.

And if bigger companies can't provide the same deal as a smaller
company...

I doubt they'll even be able to match the CityFido deal without lots
of strings attached, not to mention beating it.

Fido has chosen to excel in urban centers and not cover as much rural
area.  Fair enough.

That said, in places my Fido handset wouldn't get a signal 2 years
ago, I'm getting coverage now, so the network has definately expanded
into more rural areas.

I for one feel good that Fido is taking on the "Big Boys" in their own back
yards. It's a pity they could not have done so two years earlier.

Yes, the Fido network has improved all areas where the demand for service is
high.

Rogers and Telus is requesting handing in complete active hand-sets as part of
the exchange deal.

I wonder, who is responsible for charges incurred after hand-over since they
demand active accounts. Or, put another way what do they intend to do with these
working hand-sets.

Their employees are going to use them to get their own Fido accounts! :)

If you must hand over the handset AND the SIM card, then you'd be extremely
stupid not to cancel your Fido acocunt since then AT&T staff could use your
phone and you'd still get the bill.

So to AT&T, it is a smart move since it means that customers will truly have
cancelled their Fido accounts.

And I suspect that AT&T will resell those phones to Fido or even Nokia who may
refurbish them or simply use the spare parts for repairs.

Gees, why didn't I think of that.

To-day I drop into Rogers and a Telus store.

Rogers employees informed me that they do not have the wording yet but think
it's just a matter of bringing  in the phone or the current invoice. And they
wil cancel the Fido account. There's goes you favourite number. :-( Number
transfers not possible.

There is a choice of just two phones, both of which are crappy low end. No
substitutes. And no contract required.

Whereas Telus will give you CAD$50.00 and a free 83000 or A540 for CAD$50.00 if
you are prepared to sign a contract [ 2 years ] and the owner is responsible for
cancelling the Fido phone. Again, no substitutes.

Neither of these deals are attractive in my estimation.

I think you got a little mixed up. Telus will give you a free AudioVox 8300
with no Contract, or a free Samsung A540 with a 2 year contract.

The client can also have the Samsung A540 for 100$ if they do not wish to
take a contract.

All other phones will get an instant rebate of 50$ with cancellation of
their fido. This applies no matter if the client wants to take on a contract
or stay month to month or go prepaid.

And just to add...
Fido clients get per second billing on all advertized Fido plans.
Unadvertized fido plans are not available

No Contract = 1 month of unlimited local calls
1 Year Contract = 2 months of unlimited local calls
2 Year Contract = 3 months of unlimited local calls
3 Year Contract = 6 months of unlimited local calls

Overall its still great. I find those 2 phones are great and in no way do I
find them cheap. They both have great features. I find its a bargain.

Yes, indeed I was a little mixed up. Thank you for pointing this out.

In fact, the 8300 was upgraded to 83000 also.

Incidentally, Rogers will match these calling features also.

However, I beg to differ on the phones offered.

Having tried both and found them to be bitterly disappointing in many areas.

I am not alone here either, as attested by Steve Punter at
http://www.arcx.com/sites/

Again, thank you for putting the record straight.

I would NOT move to any company that gives me a special deal which I may lose
at any time because that deal applies only to new customers.

Lets say that I have the $27 package with Fido and I move to Telus or AT&T.
Sure, they will give me what looks like similar rates. But what happens if my
usage then grows and I would prefer to switch to the $47.00 package from Fido
? Would Telus or AT&T upgrade my grandfathered price plan  to another Fido
plan ?

The feeling I get is that if one is to move to Telus or AT&T under those
deals, one becomes locked to whatever plan one had at the last time with Fido
and the second you need to make a change to that plan, you are then forced to
move to the regular plans requiring contracts, per-minute billing etc etc.

If Telus and AT&T want to compete against Fido, let them offer those rates to EVERYONE.

I am with you on this one.

If they did offer the same deal to everyone which they will not. Think of all
the disgruntled people they are going to have on two and three year terms.

And, I wouldn't want to loose my FidoPro for the world.;-)
