I just heard, but haven't gotten the particulars.  But, apparently FIDO is
offering an unlimited 24/7 plan (local only) for $40/month?  Should one give
up their regular land line?

www.cityfido.ca

It's only available in Vancouver right now (test market).

You could transfer your landline over, but it's not required to get
the plan.

How much with caller ID and CRTC BS fee is the total/month?
Just a thought....what happens if you own a fax machine?

No system access fee. AFAIK all "normal" Fido features are available for the
same price, so CID would be $3/month IIRC.

If you've got a fax then you've got an issue, I don't think Fido has fax
reception anymore. TTYL

With the price of $9.00 and only receive, it  may be  better to stick with a
land line.

For the guys that still want fax while on City Fido,

I have set up a fax to email account with Telus for $5/month

So people just fax me a my Telus fax number and I received the fax as an
email.

To go the other way, you can get email to fax from Telus too.

Check you www.mytelus.com

City Fone is great but what happens if you have ADLS at home?

Actually, there is a ruling that has come down (which Telus has appealled)
where Telus WILL HAVE TO UNBUNDLE dsl service from requiring a mandatory
landline as well.. AND the pricing will have to be competitive with what the
value would have been if you just dropped the telephone service...

Oh, I think it'll occur, now, whether it'll occur in our lifetimes is up
for debate. When have you EVER seen the government move "quickly" with this
sort of thing?

I'm familiar with that ruling, but it has nothing to do with
directing the companies involved to provide xDSL *without* landline
service. You must still have a mandatory voice line, but it can
now be with a different company from the xDSL provider.

It will be news when you can have an xDSL connection and a cell
phone with no landline.

As of Friday October 17, 2003 Telus told me that if I cancel my landline, I
lose my ADSL.

Only when/if Telus will lose their appeal will they unbundle DSL.

It's only marginally more better (depending on where you are) and a lot more
expensive.  But, that's another topic all together.

: Switch to Shaw Harry.

U can't.  I just found out.
