Steinbock - 15 Oct 2003 04:56 GMT Am heavy user (about 3000mins/month), just signed up for CityFido, as you can not beat the price. So far my findings: -reception crappy to poor anywhere east of the Portman bridge, dropped calls etc, -good to acceptable downtown and North Shore -simply terrible in Abbotsford and Mission.
Is my experience unique? Perhaps a bad handset (V60i)? If not, the aggravation of lost calls and lost business is simply not worth the couple of hundred bucks that the plan would save me. Your opinions are most welcome and appreciated- I am simply not familiar with Fido, been a Telus customer for last 14 years... thanks in advance!

WOW!
What a contrast.
The previous poster... "Based on my Telus experiences with sound quality and going to voicemail when the phone is not busy, I could not live with Telus wireless as a substitute for my landline. I have with Fido for 4 years now."
Same geographical area, I believe.
Steinbock - 15 Oct 2003 05:59 GMT Yes... So it might be my phone? or- maybe not? Telus sound quality (LG520), good to excellent about 90% of the time in the area betwenn North Van and Abbotsford, Fido - so far about 45% (and I am in a good mood now...) What gives?
> WOW! > [quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > > Same geographical area, I believe. mikelats - 15 Oct 2003 07:24 GMT I don't think you're the only one. The only reason I keep my Rogers account is that its signal, in the Greater Vancouver Area, is better and more reliable than Fido's.
It seems that the quality of signal is controlled by Voodoo priestesses because, while many people on this Newsgroup claim they have perfect reception, everybody I know and myself have experienced the same situation you described.
It's a mystery to me why Fido chose Vancouver to test this plan because its network sucks big time in this city and I cannot imagine how Fido will cope with the demand in case they get new customers by the hundreds or even by the thousands.
I work close to Fido's flagship store and had never seen it so full so I assume they've all been lured by this new plan. Let's see how much they like it. Maybe Fido wants to know for sure how much crap people are willing to put up with...

I've used a succession of Nokia handsets and am now on a SE P800. The reception on Fido has always been nothing short of supurb all the way from downtown right out to Cloverdale. I regularly talk on my wireless headset while driving out to the valley and have had absolutely no problems.
>It's a mystery to me why Fido chose Vancouver to test this plan because its >network sucks big time in this city and I cannot imagine how Fido will cope >with the demand in case they get new customers by the hundreds or even by >the thousands. I must argue the point, their network in Vancouver is great. Even during the fireworks downtown with ~350,000 other people, I still got a good signal and no network congestion.

I rather doubt it - Nothing Rogers or Telus could do would ever convince me to go to a contract, or billing by the MINUTE. CityFido (which I switched to) is the icing on the cake.
Mikelats - 15 Oct 2003 15:54 GMT > Maybe people are using cheap/poor handsets? I don't know what you call cheap handsets because I've also used some of the most recent phones by Nokia and Sony Ericsson including the 9290, 6310i, 3650, T39m, R520m and the P800 which is the one I am using currently.

Once again, I do not know what you call "superb" but your comment just proves my point about the Voodoo priestesses because it seems like your experience is totally the opposite to my own and to the opinions of many people I know who, by the way, work on the business of making phones (and believe me, they don't use cheap phones either!). Maybe you happen to live and work close to Fido's towers.
> I must argue the point, their network in Vancouver is great. Even > during the fireworks downtown with ~350,000 other people, I still got > a good signal and no network congestion. That may be true but I just wonder how many of those people had Fido phones. The vast majority of people in the GVA have either Telus or Rogers TDMA accounts so obviously that wouldn't overwhelm Fido's network.
> Nothing Rogers or Telus could do would ever > convince me to go to a contract, or billing by the MINUTE. Well, for me the most important thing is the quality and reliability of the voice service because, in the end, that's mainly what I want my mobile for. Even though Rogers' network is far from perfect, in my experience (as I said before), it is still better than Fido's so I'd rather pay a little more and get what I expect than pay less and get (what I paid for!) crappy service. To me the latter sounds like being penny wise, pound foolish...
> CityFido (which I switched to) is the icing on the cake. If it really works for you, then good for you! Seriously. But if many more people keep signing on for the new plan and Fido keeps doing nothing to improve its network in the GVA, you will see how sour the "icing on that cake" can be...

Mikelats, get your head out of your biased a.s. You'd think that FIDO has provided enough OPEX and CAPEX to drive this service (if you don't know what those terms mean, check a financial mgmt text book). Why would R&ATT and Telus Mobility respond so vehemently if there wasn't a threat?
Did you hear the one were the Telus landline VP said the cellular service was not as reliable..? Funny..

He is in a less heavily developed area, so it is possible, although my reception in all of Surry and Langly has been very good when I was there. My work takes me to construction sites all over.
I would suggest he try a different phone, but the differences in our experince can be explained by geography and population density.

I can honestly say I've never had a dropped call or poor quality out into the valley (at least so far as Cloverdale goes). I'm never really out to Mission however.
I've used my phone out in Abbotsford at the airport without any problems (except when I was inside the hanger ;)

Or just test your own phone in a store, listen to the sound quality, and ask them if you can drop your SIM into another phone to compare.

Wow.. this is definitely different than my experience. I travel all over the lower mainland, throughout Abbotsford, Surrey, Langley, and Mission, but my coverage experiences are not at all like yours. I have coverage everywhere I go and the voice quality is superb.
Different stroke for different folks, I guess..?
I was at my friends place on Sumas Mtn this last weekend for Thanksgiving, his Telus phone kept cutting out (he 'was' using it as his all-in-one communications tool), but my handset gave crystal clear quality.
Phillis_c - 15 Oct 2003 23:40 GMT While we are busy arguing this, why not we all go over to HF and see the result? I didn't have the time today but I surely will ask for comments on calls quality.
In my experience after getting CityFido, my phone just works wherever I go. From Surrey, Richmond, Vancouver, Downtown, Metrotown. I don't even experience a drop call or system busy. I live in Richmond and the quality is just great.

I for one know that the TM 250 has one of the worst incoming sound quality, and CDMA phones on whole have worse sound quality than GSM phones..I can't see how you could say the Fido network has bad sound quality.
I find this post to be pure bs, someone basically trying to cause some problem, discouraging people from signing up with Fido.

I have kind of internal information from Fido (and Rogers) and I know that with the difficulties that Fido encountered in the beginning of the year, no more investment was put in the network. Their GSM software version throughout their network is 2 years old (to give you a comparaision, they are still running on Win95).
Rogers is part of the top 10 GSM carriers around the world that are the most advanced technologically (what a shift from Rogers!!!). They have rolled out GSM 1900mhz in 1 year, GMS 850 mhz in 6 month and they have planed to roll out EDGE next year.
Fido is trying to hurt Telus in their home town. Telus, Bell and Rogers replies with aggressive plans to Fido shifters in Montreal and Toronto.
Is the price war is opened?... your guess is as good as mine. But I think Fido will run out of ammo very fast!.

The above paragraph proves your full of bullshit. No extra investment? Way of base there.
