With current GSM technology, about 30 km. I have had 3 bars on my 6190 some
27km away from Mont Tremblant.
I might be in Arundel Québec, but Fido thinks I am in St-Jovite, about 20km
away because that is where the antennas are located.
Similarly, west on montreal, you might be across lake of two mountains and get
signal from the other side, which means that a landline call would be long
distance, but a fido call isn't. (or vice versa).
However, in a metropolitan area, it is much harder to understand/know which
tower you are talking to since there are so many. You can look at Steve
Punter's comprehensive web site ( http://www.arcx.com/sites/index.htm ) and
you may have a better idea of where the towers are located near you.

I don't think the Clarkson on your bill refers to the street in Oakville but
to a CO in the west end of Toronto.
