V60i & Fido Related Question

A relative of mine recently purchased a V60i from Fido and activated it on a
Pay as You Go basis. Now he plans to travel to Greece for 5 months or so
and wants to use this phone in Greece with a Pay as You Go card from there.
He will have a relative here in Vancouver add the minimum amount to his
phone just to keep his number active cause he was told if you don't add
minutes in two months Fido will revoke/suspend his number. My question is
can my relative take his phone to Greece or where ever in Europe and
activate his V60i as a Pay As You Go there? Is the phone locked to Fido
only, even if it's a world phone?

if my memory serves me correctly, pay as you go wont allow you to roam
internationally. to use another SIM card, the phone needs to be unlocked.
you can get it done for a nominal fee of around $35, $200 at Fido.

Won't work. Pay as you Go doesn't allow roaming. And since the phone is locked
to Fido, a italian SIM card will be rejected by the phone.

You have 3 options:
-get the phone unlocked ($$$) at which point you can insert the italian sim
card in it
-move to a postpaid plan and get roaming enabled (but roaming costs are high)
-leave phone at home and get a cheap phone while you are there.

If you've just purchased the phone, you may with to compare the option of
returning the phone for refund and buying the same model unlocked versus the
cost of having your locked phone unlocked.

If you were on a postpaid plan with Fido, you ****might*** try to convince
them to unlock your phone in exchange for a commitment to stay with fido for X
months. But on a pre-paid plan, you really cannot expect any goodies from Fido.

Phone unlocking is CHEAP, I don't see the reason to go any other route.

Now the inactive PAY fido accounts are valid 4 months. That's what Fido
told me when they offer me free airtime on my mother account becaus it was
inactive for a couple of months. I think they don't want to loose even
these low usage customers to another operator. So your freind just need to
put a 25$ in it before leaving and it will be ok for 6 month (2+4). Better
to ask Fido because the change their policy whitout notice.

Don't need an italian card since he go to greece :)

I think he don't want to roam just use a local card so he just need to
unlock his phone since the fido phones are locked to work just with fido.
For 5 months anyway it's a lot better to buy a card there even if he need to
buy or unlock the phone.

It cost about 30-50$ to unlock a phone so it don't worth it to return
expecially il he got it cheap from Fido. Maybe if he can get a similar
phone ine europe for less but with prepaid it will be hard.

I use them to unlock a motorola whithout problems and now it look like you
don't need to send them your phone. They give you a code and that's all.

It's locked, he'll have to get it unlocked.

As for keeping the account active that's not a problem, just dial *46
from any Fido postpaid phone and enter the other number and follow the
prompts. TTYL
