Triband, J2ME, MMS, colour screen for that price? Great deal... if you can
live with its looks (I think it's horribly ugly, but that may be just my
opinion).

I have both and M55 & S55, among many other, and I have to say that I would
take the M55 over the S55 any day. Totally cool phone with great reception
for several hundred dollars less than it's more formal sibling (doesn't come
w/ camera or bluetooth though..). Easy to use (very Nokia like..), very
customizable (love the animated backgrounds (use can use animated GIF's as a
backdrop), good battery life (just don't leave its flashing lights on all
the time), and overall a pleasure to use.

How many days does your battery last you for your M55 mistaroboto??

Considering I put on about 200 minutes a day, it lasts about 2 days of solid
use. If I use it intermittantly, like over the weekend, no need to recharge
until Monday (having charged Friday morning).

Oh ok, thanks.  I'm used to Nokia batteries lasting FOREVER, that's all.
Siemens needs to spend a day with the manufacturers of Nokia's batteries &
pick up some tips on how to make their own batteries last longer.

If you can, Lithium-Ion batteries SHOULD be topped up. They'll last longer
if they are kept at or near full charge. How much you reduce the life of the
battery by letting it run down more isn't clear, and I'm sure that in the
long run it wouldn't be a huge issue. However, if you can top it up
overnight why not do so anyway?

I find the keys tiny, but I have been very happy with the reception and
sound quality.  The volume setting is not upfront or on the side and is not
easily adjustable.  It is *almost* as good as a Nokia.  But, for the price,
you can NOT go wrong.  I think you did fine with phone.   .

Changing the volume is easy, during a call you just push up on the middle
button.

I have had my M55 for 5 days and do like it so far.  I upgraded from a Nokia
3390.  Only complaint I have is that battery life conditioning should be
improved.  It blows away the reception on the Nokia phones (3390,7210).  I
also tried my friends' Nokia 7210 and the M55 has excellent reception blows
the Nokia away.  I tested my M55 in fringe areas in the lower mainland
(South Langley etc) and the M55 was able to hold calls with solid signal
strength on the display while the two models from Nokia 3390, 7210
registered nothing in signal strength (couldn't make a call).  Also the M55
did not drop calls in places where the Nokias' traditionally drop calls.
For example, driving north on Blenheim street from 41st to 25th Ave the
Nokias traditionally drop calls.  While the M55 had no problem at all.  The
same thing happens while driving north on the 99 highway right before you
enter the George Massey tunnel the 3390 and 7210 would drop calls.  The M55
no problem.  The only concern I have with the M55 is that the battery
doesn't last longer.
If I were to get a phone and don't care about battery life I would
consider the M55 if my concern is having my phone last the whole week
without charging it maybe another phone might be better to look for.  This
is my non biased opinion, only phones I have used with Fido have been the
Nokia 2190,5190,3390,7210 and now the Siemens M55.  I still have the option
of returning the M55 back to Fido but not for a few more days so I am still
trying to decide.........................

Get a car charger or plug it in at night. Should solve your issue, battery
life is NOT that bad.. Make sure to turn of the flashing light setting so it
doesn't flash all the time, only when a message comes in, your on a call, or
what.

the same number.  this has worked before for me.

if not, i can cancel and become a new subscriber.  no problem.

square one today. kiosk is not where the maps indicate.
struck out.  guy behind the counter wouldn't do anything once
i told him i already have an account.   i spoke to customer
service on their phone.  didn't work out either.  final offer
since i've been a good customer since aug 2001 was $25
for the M55.  No extras like car charger/handsfree and case.
I declined.  I could have kept my original phone number too.
but the extras are vital to me and will cost another $50.

tomorrow Fairview Mall kiosk.  thru a third party, i've already
got the ok.  This will be the phone, extras but a new number.
I'll later on go to the flagship and get my analog phone set up.
Also, i'll just cancel my other phone.  I'll be posting the
results late friday night.

could have got it at the Fairview Mall kiosk for sure.  would have
cost 5.75.  Instead I was at 1st Markham Place and got it for $0
at Digicell.net  a small shop with a very helpful sales guy.
got the extras for free too.  the case is a clear one with
a strong belt clip.  unfortunately, i hear the deal is
over tonight.  don't know for sure tho.

when i told the guy i already had an account with fido,
he said he would have to phone for activation and i would
be limited to a choice of three phone numbers.  i don't
care about the number.  apparently, the chinese
community cares greatly.

I have always had good reception on my Nokia's on 99, incliding the
tunnel, from my 6190 to 8890 to 8390

I am concerned that Fido is loosing customers when the 5190/6190
recepting seems to deteriate with age. People compare their old phone
with deteriorating reception to a brand new telus or rogers and think
Fido's network is weak (aided by the shady/corrupt Rogers/telus dealers
talk).

If they could be persuaded to compare new phones to new phones Fido
would have a much better reputation.

Try this!  Heading north about 2km before the highway 10 overpass right to
the Deas Slough try to see if your Nokia tries to maintain a call or at
least try to maintain a garbled call. You'll be surprised. In the tunnel
it's great though. For all phones...

new phone does NOT always equal better reception. For example, the T18z, a
pretty old phone has great reception, while something like the T200 has
horrible reception by comparison.

The 5190/6190 weren't THAT bad, they just had a really bad "close to the
body" effect. TTYL

Doesn't really matter......Any phone should have great reception whether
it's having an out of body or close to body experience.  I don't buy phones
just cause they look nice and have the option of displaying an image of
Sylvia Saint when she calls (although I would answer it on the first
ring!)....After all even a really nice poindexter phone is useless if it
can't recieve the mother ship!

Actually it DOES matter. For example, the 5190/6190: if you have them in
a pants pocket or on your belt they loose a SUBSTANTIAL amount of reception
capability vs. holding it in your hand. This is a known issue with this
phone. Other phones also have a similar issue, however MOST newer ones
don't. TTYL
Nagra_Sux - 18 Dec 2003 22:01 GMT
Well even with an earpiece plugged into most current model phones the signal
strength should increase or at least stay the same even if the phone is in
your pocket or belt clip.  The earpiece/microphone actually acts as an
antenna although very inefficient because of the incorrect length its' tuned
too....

I agree, but I have run into lots of people who complained that Fido has
bad reception. They are almost all using 6190's or 5190's. I have
borrowed two of these old phones and found the reception is bad.

I also had a problem with my 6190 where reception was slowly degrading
over time. I was told by the tech it was the 'power amplifier'
