you should cancel your contract and get a new phone for free.
this possibility of phone damage is the main reason
i have fido. no contract.

Glad you think you can rook Fido so easily. I'm sure you didn't
consider that Fido has a record of their service with their social
insurance number associated with their account? Fido will do a credit
check before they authorize service. When they see that you just
cancelled service you own you will not get any new subscriber
benefits.

you are 100% wrong. as i'm sure others will point out. now, if you
had said you felt it was *wrong* to "take advantage" of their
marketing techniques, thta'd be different. Sounds to me like
you would do it if you thought you could get away with it.
you can. plenty of others have.

One does have to give up the old number. So takes some, gives some.

wrong again. i still have my original phone. still working.
and my new phone was exactly FREE! yes. 0 dollars. 0 cents.

oops. sorry. i replied too quickly. yes, this time i did have to
get a new number. once before i didn't have to. they apply
their rules according to how much you argue and also
who you are talking to. there appears to be a lot of
latitude. some you win. some you break even.
but, surely, accepting an offer of a free phone cannot
be considered poor ethics. if they want to offer it,
i want to say yes. attempting to judge the motives
of a large corporation is a bit difficult. so i don't.

Fido has NO business collecting a SIN, and you shouldn't provide them
with one. TTYL

Any business that has a credit relationship with you is entitled to
require a social insurance number from you.

again, ABSOLUTELY FALSE.
Have you ever done anything before speaking? Companies can check credit by a
number of different means of identification. In fact, it would be ILLEGAL if
Fido ONLY took SIN numbers and didn't allow for other identification means.
It is illegal to demand a SIN number in order to get service. It is however
one of the easiest ways to get credit info (With the SIN number).

No, it's not. Any business that has a tax relationship with you (i.e.
bank, employer, stock broker) is entitled to collecting you SIN. Fido, or
any other such service has NO RIGHT to ask for your SIN, and you SHOULD NOT
give it to them. If they can't perform a credit check with your other
details walk away. Giving away your SIN can open you up to identity theft
more easily then almost any other piece of information.

They are NOT entitled to get a SIN from you.

ABSOLUTELY FALSE.
You CAN cancel your line and get a new subscriber discount. Don't speak
unless you've tried to do it yourself.
