I have a GSM phone with Fido but I also have a the 8260 TDMA/Analogue
phone with Rogers (now not active).

I wish to modify the 8260 to work in areas not covered by Fido's GSM.

How would I go about doing this?

Thanks

in toronto go to the eaton's centre flagship.  i'm not sure
if the analog part of the roger's phone is locked.  fido
roams on bell in ontario.    i wasted a few trips to
different kiosks when i first did this.  i learned my lesson.

you do realize it will cost 20 (i think) cents a minute extra
to use analog?

I was hoping to reprogram the phone itself.  I recall that any phone that
supports analogue can be used on ANY network in that mode.  No unlocking is
necessary.

I don't know if Fido would charge for their programming.  I called today and
the french girl didnt know what I was talking about.  I told her three times
during the convertsation that the 8260 is not a GSM phone when she kept on
telling me that the phone would need to be unlocked from Rogers so I can
insert the Fido Sim card.  Unfortunately, my experience with Fido CSR is
very poor.  They lack knowledge.  :-(

Thanks, yes, I am aware of the $0.20 charge.  The phone would be only used
in emergencies.

You still need a lock code to unlock the phone to program your number into
it.  Also, because it is a Roger's Digital phone, it will not work with the
Bell network.  Get yourself a strictly analog phone and you will not have a
problem

Are you sure?  I recall many years ago when I didnt want to upgrade my phone
I was given the option of using my analogue/TDMA/Digital  phone on CDMA.  In
addition, changing the phone number is quite easy.  You don't need an unlock
code, just a Nokia code.  But, I'm thinking you need to know which carrier
Bell is under.

They guy at the Fido kiosk suggested this method as opposed to buying an
analogue module.

Call Fido and give them the ESN, then program your phone number into the
phone. Also you have to change analogue settings from rogers ones to bell
ones. You must have an option to force the phone into analogue mode only.
I have an CDMA/analogue phone that I use on fido, no problems.

Right, the analogue settings are the ones I am concerned about.

The band searching mechanism on your 8260 is locked to Rogers so there's no
way you can get it to search for B band first if A band is present.
Therefore, even the ESN is registered with Fido, your phone will not work in
analogue. The only 3 TDMA phones that I can think of which allow you to
program to use as analogue backup are Nokia 5120, Startac 7797 and 7897.

Technically, all Bell's CDMA phone can be programmed to work as Fido's
analogue roaming if you have the SP code to unlock the phone or have the
programming code. Once you can get to program your Fido's number into Bell's
phone, you can force the phone to work in analogue only and then it will
become your Fido analogue backup. Getting the programming code is the tricky
part.

I confirm the Startac 7797 can not be activated.
A guy from Fido flagship (Montr?al) try for more than 1 hour on it and
never manage to have it search on the B .

Oh well....I am not sure what the guy at the Fido flagshop store did. You
know what, I have never heard the guy at Fido could program a TDMA phone. I
am using a 7797 and 7897 as analogue backup right now. The thing is you
can't just simply program your phone number and the Bell's SID into your
phone to make it work. There are some other settings you need to change. All
the people I have helped in the past could get their startac to work as
analogue backup, I am sure your one can also.
