Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but I'm a fairly new Fido customer
and was curious if this is normal for GSM networks... Basically, whenever I
place outgoing calls, I hear a series of fast beeps in the earpiece of my
handset before I hear the phone starts ringing. Is that normal?... It's not
something I ever noticed with Telus Mobility (CDMA).

This is not a GSM feature but more a telephone one.

I had many cell hook to Fido. Some did this some did not.

Actually i use a Siemens a56 and it does it.

Think of GSM (the TDMA interface) as a power transmitter that is turned on
and off many times per second. These "bursts" of RF can couple into the
audio circuitry of some phones, producing noise in the earpiece. It is
simply a function of how well the maker of your phone handled this noise.
Some phones have no noise at all (i.e. the Mitsubishi G310), some phones
have alot of this noise, it all depends on which phone you got.

You didn't hear it on CDMA since CDMA doesn't have the same high power
"bursts" of RF, it spreads it's power over a large band, meaning noise
coupling into the audio subsections is far less likely. TTYL

Maybe you should describe what this series of "fast beeps" is.  I've
never encountered any beeps save for the occasional system busy.  When
that happens the call fails and won't connect.

On almost all Siemens phones, there is some kind of connection alert.  It
sounds as if someone were pressing several keys in a quick succession.  I do
not know if this can be disabled, but there is nothing wrong with the phone.

Thanks, CU. Your description of the noise is right on the money. I'm not
very good at describing noises like that. Glad to hear it's normal and there
are no problems with my handset.

Do you have a Siemens phone? If so, all of their current models do this
(which I find rather annoying). They consider it a "feature". It isn't part
of the standard and MOST GSM phones do not do this.

Thanks very much to everyone for the responses.

I do have a Siemens phone (A56). Although the noise is kind of annoying,
it's good to hear that this is just a normal occurrence with Siemens phones,
and not some kind of problem with my handset.

I'm also glad to know it's not a standard part of all GSM phones.
