Siemens M55

Does anyone knows where I can buy cheap data cable (serial or USB) in
Montreal, fido does'nt have them yet and there too expensive!!

Or even better, I you have the layout diagram for the cable.

It's for transfering new games to the phone and to setup the agenda, any
others trick would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have seen some good prices on Ebay.

Personally, I am reluctant to get one 'cuz I don't know which kind:
USB or Serial and whether it will work on a P3 BX motherboard. Also,
the original Siemens won't allow you to unlock the phone.

Well, from what I have read from forums SERIAL is better cause most of the
written program are for the serial port, you could find and apply a patch
for USB but that won't change anythingc.

The advantage of the USB is that you could charge your phone with it, on
laptop your mainly drainning your laptop's battery. Is it realy
necessairy??? But then again, if you do buy USB, buy the original cause
theyre made with a on/off switch for rechanging the phone.

You could unlock your phone, the software does the different not the
hardware, but what for? there are only two service provider in Montreal.
Would you buy a Siemens from fido(at 230$ + tax) to use it for Rogers??? It
really make no sense at all!!! If someone has a really good reason why
people should do this, then I would like to hear from you. ----The only
thing I think could be valid is because there reusing a old phone and don't
want to get stick to an 2 year contract with Rogers.----

Since it's a world phone you can use it with another prepaid SIM if you
travel.  This is a lot more economical than Fido, a lot more since fido jack
up thier international rates to make them "simpler".  You just buy prepaid
SIM with a local number, foward your fido number to it (this way you will
pay 26c for incoming calls to UK for exemple instead of 1$) put the SIM in
your unlocked phone et voil?!

Just curious, how does one know what rate is used when your phone is
forwarded to another number, say, in the UK, using your example?

You're allowed 1000 minute of forwarding for "free". After that, minutes are
consumed from your monthly alloted minutes.

If you forward your Fido phone to a number outside of your home calling area,
Fido then charges you long distance for every minute of forwarded calls. The
rate is the same as if you had dialed that number on yoru Fido phone from your
home area to the destination number.

When overseas, the smart thing is to leave a voice mail on your FIDO asking
people to call your european number. This way, you are not billed by fido for
the long distance between your home and europe and only those willing to pay
for the long distance to reach you will bother you while you are in europe.

And with a european telephone number, you can receive calles locally as well.
Otherwise, someone across the street needs to call your canadian number (pay
for overseas call) and then you have to pay for the call to bring this call
back to you.

I clearly read several times, I think on Howard's Forums that users
with OEM Siemens USB cable can NOT unlock their phone using this
cable.

There are several compagnies that copy the siemens USB cable that is one of
the reason(really cheap copys), the other reason, is that the software to
unlock the siemens phone are writhen for serial port( That's what I've read
from 3 others forums, not to say that I whant to challenge your knowledge,
that's what I've heard) to be able to use the USB port you have to find a
patch for the software.

Btw: why are you so interested in the USB there are pratically no difference
in the data transfer speed.

The lowers price I've seen on Ebay is 15$US(Cable USB) + 9$US(Shipping) +
Duty Tax = about 45$-50$ CND why don't you get the Original at fido then???

I have some pinout for the phone; This stand for all X55 from Siemens
1-> DC-IN
2-> Gnd
3-> Data-OUT
4-> Data-IN
My problem now is to find out how to build the plug or where to buy it.

Does anybody have more info on this!

Tri band phones can be used outside of Fido territory. If you travel overseas,
it may be cheaper to buy a prepaid service there than to pay the rather steep
Fido roaming prices.

Similarly, if you have friends coming over who do not have phone capable of
1900mhz, having an unlocked phone allows then to insert their sim in it and
yse yor phone on their account back home.

It also allows you to buy some AT&T prepaid service for your phone if you plan
on being somewhere where there isn't fido coverage but there is AT&T coverage.

Ideally, a phone should remain unlocked for as long as you are a subscriber of
the company that sold you the phone. But if you cancel your subscription to
that service, the phone then locks itself. This way, the network preserves its
investmenty in the subsidy while giving you certain freedoms while roaming.
