Especially since Fido has been doing this for years
(since the beginning of Fido?).  Fido only charges
10cents, not 20.

But it is nice that Rogers is improving their GSM
service.

PS. Thank you Rogers/FutureShop for the $30
Nokai 3595 that I'm using with Fido :-).

Which is interesting since you can send 1024 characters for 0.03 on GPRS while
Fido still charges 0.10 for 160 characters.

Fido is pushing people away from SMS and instead pushing them to send an email
to the other handset since it is cheaper to send an email via GPRS than to
send an SMS, even though sending an email from a handset to a FIDO phone
(received vis SMS) consumes far more resources than sending SMS-SMS.

That only works for those that have an email addy associated with
their phone.  My cousin in Croatia has no email, so I have to send him
an SMS.  I can't send an ICQ SMS to him since ICQ doesn't support his
carrier.

How does one send e-mail via GPRS?

Newer handsets have a built-in email client that sends email to an smtp
server, and retrieves emails from pop (or imap).

Or you can plug in a laptop to do the same at which point your handset acts as
a router/modem.

I'm still ticked that those in the west, Vancouver didn't have this
offer available to them.  :-(

What offer?  The FS $30 one?  I'm in Vancouver and
I ordered it on the website.  I was at FS downtown
Boxing Day morning and never bothered checking for
the phone but I assume it was also $30 since it was
advertised in the flyer.

I dont recall seeing it. In fact, I went after the fact and did a
search.  For other products sold on boxing day, it would indicate
"sold out". The 3595 was regular price, I think over $100

Where was it located, which section, webpage (clearance, etc)?  So, I
know for next time.
Thanks

It was in no special section.  The website changes
the price when it is applicable.  They also add any
mail-in rebates when it is applicable.

The 3595s were going like crazy on the website.  You
had to have been looking at the site the first couple
of hours they had the deal or replentished the stock
or you are SoL.

Even after Boxing Day, they were selling the for $50
and they did have some stock for awhile.

Next year, be sure to hit the site Dec 24,
around 2000-2100 PST.

Yep, the only price you pay was $30/$50 + tax and the
phone is yours.  Unlock it and pop your Fido card
in :-).

Did they just sell the phone without any plan or contract for that
price?

About a year and a half ago, Rogers promised me that international text
messaging would work, and it would be $0.10 per message.

They were full of sh.t. It never worked properly. That's the main reason I
switched back to Fido... although I was pleasently surprised to find MUCH
better reception on Fido (with the same phone).
Joseph - 01 Jan 2004 20:57 GMT
And just *what* is relevant about this posting in the fido newsgroup?
This is about *Rogers.*  In case you hadn't noticed Fido and Rogers
are different companies.
