Hi All,

My gf is considering switching from Telus Mobility to CityFido. Anyone
else made the switch and care to share the experience?

Thanks!

Telus has a LOT more coverage than Fido, especially in rural areas
where Fido has no coverage

I switched from Bell.  It really makes not much difference if one switched
from Bell, Rogers, or Telus.  What are you trying to find out?

Just experiences - good or bad. I'm a CityFido subscriber myself, but
only ever used a Telus landline, so while I can answer some CityFido
questions, I can't compare to Telus Mobility.

Feel free to post your own experience though.

thanks!

Personally, I like Bell and Telus (CDMA) better.  Better coverage,
free star lines. But Fido is great internationally and adequate for
the lower mainland. But, it's all about preference and where you'll be
using the phone more often.

Both serve their specific target market well.  A couple of complaints
though:

1.  Fido has a lot of new staff and like others have mentioned, the
new reps on the phone give out incorrect information.  However, as I
understand it, this is temporary.
2. The cost of joining City Fido if you weren't subscribed to Fido
prior to November and don't migrate your landline

I have Bell Mobility in Vancouver, and they do not offer STAR lines.

I first did when I roam on the Telus system using Bell. But when Bell got
the their system put into BC, I was charged long distance for using the
'free' STAR lines, and then they were locked out.

So now I just used Bell on weeknights after 6 pm and on weekends.

Then City Fido during the week days. We have no land line anymore since we
switched to City Fido from Telus land line.

Some times the RF GSM signal gets into the headset.

But the voice sounds better than a CDMA.

I have used Telus Mobility for 2 years and then decided to switch to
CityFido because of obvious cost reasons.  I have also swtiched phones after
signing up with Fido.  I switched from Sony Ericsson's T310 to Sony
Ericsson's Z600 (which isn't available in N.America yet, it's the model
displayed on the front homepage at www.sonyericsson.com and you can search
for reviews on the Z600) basically going from Sony Ericsson's entry level to
their top of the line phone.  I will note which phone I am using when
listing my experience as I find that using different phone on the same
network does have some differences in terms of reception quality.  My last
Telus phone (I went through 3) that I'm comparing my Fido experience to is
the Samsun A520 (the color screen one).

I will list some points of my experience after the switch.
- I mainly work in the urban areas such as Vancouver, Burnaby and Richmond
(driving all the time) so therefore, there is hardly any difference in terms
of reception compared to Telus.  (T310 & Z600)
- With CityFido, I have experienced some dropped calls here and there, but
it hasn't happened to me for a while now.  I signed up with CityFido on the
very first day that they introduced CityFido so they may have been
overwhelmed for a bit initially, but hardly any dropped calls lately. (T310
& Z600)
- I was told or learned that Cypress coverage or the coverage in the local
mountains was bad to no service with Fido cause I did get reception at
certain points on Cypress Mountain with Telus. I was up at Grouse mountain
on a heavy rainy night last week and Fido had full strength on my phone.  I
haven't brought my Z600 to Cypress yet.  (Z600 Sony Ericsson)
- Certain areas the T310 would be slightly weaker in terms of getting a
reception while the Z600 would be slightly to more obviously stronger in
terms of getting reception.

Due to the nature of my work, I talk a lot and usually my Telus Mobility
phone bill averages around $200 to $250 per month.  Because I use my phone
in non rural areas, it was a no brainer to switch to CityFido at $40 +
whatevermandatoryexpensetheyhavetoaddon and I was so lucky that the end of
my 2 year contract with Telus coincided with Fido's launch date for CityFido
(overlapped by only 2 weeks).

I highly recommend doing your homework and finding out which phone is of
good quality as I believe that to max out your usage/enjoyment of a network,
make sure you have a phone that plays a smaller role or is a non issue when
it comes to reception.  My T310 is a $50 phone while my Z600 is over
$600....obviously you would expect some difference in network reception and
I do based on a daily heavy usage, no exact science here however.

See what your needs are, how much you can afford for a phone (I highly
recommend the Sony Ericsson T616 which is going for $400) and then decide if
CityFido is for you.  It all depends on your needs and fortunately for
CityFido, many people's need aren't that rural.

Feel free to ask me any questions.

A couple of years ago I was on Cypress with a friend who was using
Telus. We compared and found that the reception as similar in terms of
both having coverage in some areas but not others. However the locations
where the phones worked was different.

I ski on Hollyburn and if I got up the hill from the First Lake lodge I can
get a signal.  Or ski on the upper trails for XC.

Otherwise no signal since Hollyburn XC ski area is on the North side of the
mountain.

Works great on the south or east side when you get see the city.

Also I tried with Bell and got Vancouver Island and Abbotsford in the Fraser
Valley.

So long distance charges would apply.

Very good points.  I am using two phones right now.  Finally got the
V60i and also the Siemens M55.  I must admit the V60i is better in
reception and sound quality  then with the Siemens.  Perhaps that
explains the difference in price between the two?  I have used an
Audiovox phone with Bell and I have absolutely no complaints with it.
A solid and reliable phone indeed.

Hi Nex,

Thanks for being so thorough. She found it very helpful. She's started
doing some research on the Phones as per your advice.

I've got a V60i on CityFido and its been great - I got one dropped call
today - it was my first on over two months of using the service.

I haven't used Telus Mobility so I couldn't really comment on the
differences (if any) between the two providers, so once again - thanks!
