I'm having trouble texting/SMSing someone in Florence, Italy...
I've SMSed people int he UK and Australia before with no problems.
My buddy gave me his number. It was something like +39349257xxxx. I first
tried to send a msg to that number with the delivery receipt. The receipt
came back saying REJECTED, error 087.
He was able to succesfully send a msg to me. When I hit reply (and add a 111
delivery receipt), the same thing happened - it came back with a rejection.
Any ideas on how I could SMS him?
I tried other SMSC numbers... they don't even let the message get sent.
Why is he able to SMS me but mine bounce back?
Please help...

Try using 011 instead of +. Sometimes that helps, sometimes not.
Which provider is he on? I'll update my list:

That's because it's a Vodafone number (also previously known as Omnitel)
with their crappy policy of blocking all international SMS.
There's nothing you can do but ask if your friend has a number on TIM or
Wind providers which won't give you any problems.

Speaking of which... updated for Vodafone in Italy not working. :(
If OP gets it working, I'll move it to working, but I'm more than willing to
believe Vodafone doesn't work to a particular country. I'm always a little
surprised when I read a report that it *does* work to a country.

It is not uncommon that a network refuses inbound SMS from otyher networks
while allowing SMS to leave its own netowrk to go elsewhere.
You might be better off sending your messages via email from your phone. Much
less efficient, but it wouldn't get blocked.
I think that the GSM association should really work harder at allowing
inter-network SMS.

I guess this is what I will probably have to end up doing... Does anyone
know the email address to send Vodafone/Omnitel Italy messages to? What the
format is?
Thanks.

If your phone has a setting to "reply via same centre" then turn it
on. Now try replying to your friend's message. Hopefully this will
work.

Tried that too already...
Tried everything! Nothing works...
I have the error codes, 087 and 092 on the delivery reports... Does that
help anything at all?
Thanks.

Some networks impose termination fees of up to 6.5 Euro Cents per message.
All networks in France, Italy and Spain do so. Many other networks in Europe
have the same requirement. In general you cannot send to these networks,
although you can receive messages from those networks. To overcome this
limitation you will have to go through one of the independent SMS
specialists.
I have been using www.ipipi.com for over 3 years now. Great and ever
expanding network coverage and functionality way beyond what your handset
offers.
Hope this helps,

Can it be used as a replacement for Fido's message center on a handset?

*ALL NETWORKS*? I don't think so. You can still send messages to TIM,
Wind (Italy) and other providers listed on Steven's website with no
extra charge to the receiver and just a standard charge for the sender
(10 cents on Fido).

It's pretty stupid to block for termination fees. How many times a day does a
user NOT reply to a SMS? Get 'em on the send.

What Fido can do is charging more to send these messages and pay this charge
with it. That's the way it work in France. You pay 15 cents for regular
SMS and 30 cents for international one. Of course recieving SMS are free
with them (as receiving calls!).
