FYI

Just found out the Vancouver CityFido package has increased from $40 to $45
monthly.

The change is reflected on their website, but wasn't in store when I
went in to Willowbrook yesterday. Must have just happened.

Still a fair price, IMO.

Is this for new users only or does it apply to current subscribers too?

Buddee.

That's the question, isn't it? I have no idea what the answer is yet...
I haven't; been able to find a press release or anything about it.

1 year for existing customers, if you go on a new Fido agreement for 24
months you get it for 2 years ($40 month rate).

I called Fido customer service yesterday and they told me that the $45 rate
is for new subscribers. Anyone that signed up at $40 will stay there for 12
months before getting an increase.

I can live with this.

Hmm, why didn't they grandfather the one's that got it for $40?

They did, for a year w/o agreement. W/ agreement, 2 years.

That's not grandfathered the way most people interpret it.  The way
most people interpret grandfathered is that the rate will remain the
same for as long as they have the product and don't change any of
their terms.

Goes to show you that they "probably" were losing money at the $40
mark, just like the competition said.

I doubt it. If the difference between $40 and $45 was the difference
between loss and profit, I'm sure they'd have gone up to $50 instead.

Could also be a question of CityFido being bigger succcess than expected and
they had to slow its growth because there wasn't enough capacity left on the network.
AndrewH - 19 Feb 2004 17:12 GMT
Personally I doubt that network capacity is a problem, although some
tweaking is needed in some areas, like my own in Kitsalino.

I think a bigger issue is that of opportunity - it is common to use an
'introductory price' for a new product to get the market talking about
it. They may also have expected more competition on price, but that has
not happened, neither fixed or wireless competitors have tride to
compete with CityFido. Further, the current disgust with Telus service
has also given them an opportunity to push the price a little more. You
don't wait months to get a phone, as is the current case with Telus.

Hehe, you obviously don't know what you are talking about. Hint: a company
may raise a price for more reasons then cost.

No, it goes to show you that they are trying (like a company should) to
maximize profits and the fact that the market would bear another $5 for this
type of service. When the service was launched it was communicated that the
price and features may change, but that the basics of the offering would
remain.

Personally, I think the change was rather abrupt.  Maybe I am reading into
things, but I think there is "more to this  than meets the eye"

And I found this true also when I was wearing my pointed aluminum hat
which receives signals from Microcell's corporate office.

It don't show diddly.  What it does show is your own speculation that
hasn't been proven to be true.  Anyone can badmouth.
