Interesting article :

(sorry if URL wraps)

Government wants all of Sweden covered for 3G as a "demo" for Ericsson to sell
to other countries. Some communities are resisting or refusing to allow the
new 3g towers to come out.
Some people fear the health effects.

Interesting recommendation: use a headset so that you can keep your phone away
from head.

Lets remember that Canada cancelled its 3G auction, so we are nowhere near
starting that project. Rogers is busy converting its network from TDMA to GSM.
Microcell isn't exactly flush with cash.  (Has anyone in north american begun
a 3 g implementation project ?)

See here:

"It will also allow deployment of a ‘live' third generation (3G)
wireless network, enabling a service ‘showcase' in Montréal using
technology based on the UMTS standard."

Enjoy

"will allow" doesn't translate to "is building". Also, a demonstrator in
Montreal doesn't mean rollout throughout the montreal area, it could be as
simple as installing that network in their headquarters (which is Place
Bonaventure, a very large building) as a demo.

I am not sure they would be allowed to roll out a G3 network on a frequency
range other than what they currently have. And what they currently have
probably couldn't give you streaming video and multiple phone conversations.

Is UMTS really 3G?  I don't think it falls under 3G ... more like 2.75 at
speeds of 100-150 kbps.  Rogers is going forward with a rollout sometime
this year IIRC.  In fact, I think they had a 'demonstration' rollout in
Vancouver, but I haven't been able to find anything on the topic other than
the original article.
