Wednesday's La Presse had some comments about Fido.

Fido still not profitable. Lost $11,2 million instead of $123 million a year ago.

Fido's visit to the bankrupcy court resulted in its debts being reduced by
$1.6 billion ast of may 2003.

Average revenu per customer increased by 5,4% for the industry in Canada.

Text/photo messaging represents only 3 to 5% of revenus compared to 10% in europe.

They mention City Fido, "costing between $40 and $45"  (interesting in light
of recent messages aboutr Fido raisiong it to $45). They expect customers to
consume between 1000 and 1200 minutes per month on City Fido, or about 3 cents
per minute.

Warning about telus restarting a price war to combat Fido in the west.

Microcell Management are still busy reneghotiating the remaining debt.  It
expect to get an addition 100 million in line of credit financing. One analyst
predicts Fido can't be profitable until at least 2006.

The churn rate is of concern according to an analyst. Fido's would be at 3.3%,
whereas industry average would be at 1,9%. Average Fido customer stays for 21
months, whereas for others, it is 41 months.

Fido spends $241 to get each new customer, versus $438 for the rest of the industry.

Does anyone know how the churn rate is actually calculated ? what does 3.3%
actually mean ?

There are no ACTUAL standards across carriers for calculating churn. Where
as Rogers only churns a prepaid customer after being inactive for 12 months
(if that), Microcell churns the same customer after 5 months.

That seems a pretty high estimate to me -- 1200 minutes is 20 hours. I
probably go over that most months since my wife is out of the country,
but I seriously doubt that many do.

There must be some really heavy users out there to drag the average that
high.

I agree, however, in practice for fido it is not that bad as most of
that will be evenings, not daytime when people are at work.

The fact that all networks offer free evening packages indicates that
the networks are not all that busy at night.

I am not sure it has to do with overal usage as opposed to concentration of
users. During the day, you have a lot of people concentrated in the small
downtown core. At night, they go back to their light density suburban homes
where you have far fewer subscribers per cell.

The average usage on CityFido is indeed 1200 minutes.
