Does anyone know how I can send an SMS message without using the Fido (or
any) gateway?

When I was a Telus Mobility subscriber I was able to email a message to my
phone using xxx-xxx-xxxx@mobile.telusmobility.com .

Help is much appreciated!

You could use software that will send direct to fido not using a gateway.
