I'm trying to understand what sms is and isn't.  For instance, I have a
phone which has text messaging,  but which is sprint pcs so I'm pretty sure
is not gsm.  Is that (the text messaging) sms?  Is sms only available on gsm
phones?

thanks.

SMS is teh acronymn for "Short Message Service" and is a generic term that
applys to all technologies.

Strictly speaking SMS is a GSM feature.  SMS stands for Short Message
System.  All carriers now have messaging capabilities *except* that
Sprint PCS has had a system called "short mail" and to retrieve mail
you had to go to the mobile web.  SMS as handled by most other
carriers is store and forward so you'll get the messages directly sent
to your handset.  I believe Sprint PCS is supposed to be rolling out
traditional text messaging, but I'm not sure whether they've completed
it yet or if all phones on Sprint PCS support it.  In reading further
not all phones will support the "regular" SMS.
