What is the best option for getting a short term (less than a week) GSM
phone for France/Switzerland?

Get a phone here in the states and a pre-paid SIM card over there?  What
else?

Renting is money down a rat hole (IMHO). You can buy a very good,
brand-new, never-locked, tri-band GSM phone for less than $80. Then
it's your's to keep. Buy prepaid SIMs after you arrive; or for
convenience (at a price) before you leave, from a place like
Telestial.com.

Can you point me to anywhere I can find such a deal on a tri-band phone?
I have not seen any deals like that.

I bought an Ericsson R520m from Cellularshowroom.com via an eBay auction.
Their current web price for this phone is $51.99 + $25.00 S&H or $76.99. It
has been just perfect for my needs. It is automatic tri-band (no manual
switching from 1900 to 900/1800), WAP, GPRS, Bluetooth, IrDA, etc. It comes
with an A/C charger and CD-ROM program to set up the phones functions via
IrDA.  From different sources I bought an OEM leather belt case, tiny travel
charger and 2.5 mm headset adapter. This phone was over $400 a couple of
years ago.

With what you pay for your week's worth of phone rental you could
*buy* your own second hand phone and a prepaid card.  You should be
able to get a European capable phone for $50 or so.
