I was browsing all over the web looking at phnes and I came upon the
Nokia 6260 on a UK site. Of course after seeing that beauty, I go to
Nokia USA. Nothing even remotely like it.
Why does Europe get all the cool phones from Nokia?
I think this is why I've been sticking to Motorol and Kyocera for the
last few years.
I used to be a huge Nokia fan, but this crap they sell now in America
is just wrong.

The 6260 gets mixed reviews -- see
<http://www.mobile-review.com/review/nokia-6260-en.shtml>
You should be able to buy one for use on any GSM carrier in the USA; e.g.,

Perhaps because of a widely held belief in Europe (and Japan) that
Americans generally have an inferior taste and lack of appreciation of
aesthetics. (Just compare the look of American cars with the ones
produced in Europe or Japan, for instance, and you could see why that
image of American taste persists.) So they figure they can dump stuff
here that would not sell elsewhere.

Hey, we get them here in Australia as well!
The reason you don't get them in the USA is possibly twofold - non
conformist GSM frequencies (USA 850 & 1900 whatever they are called), and
the rest (or most) of the world 900/1800.
However Nokia are now producing 900/1800/1900 tri-band phones, and will
soon no doubt be issuing a quad band phone a la Motorola. (Rumoured to be
the Symbian OS 6680)
The main reason, IMO, is that the networks in USA keep a tight reign on
things, and don't want to be lumbered with too many models; makes life
easy for them.
In Europe, Asia, Australia etc. there are heaps of independent retailers
selling phones with or without a plan (on the major Telcos); something I
have never seen in my many business trips to LA (but maybe I have missed
this?).
In any major or minor shopping area in Australia you can find shops
selling up to 15 different Nokia models at any one time; in UK Carphone
Warehouse have a roaring business doing this.
Ultimately the blame lies with Cingular/AT&T and T-Mobile I suppose in
the GSM end, and probably Verizon in the CDMA field.

Any indirect dealer will sell you a phone without a plan. It just
costs more, since the telcos subsidize the price if you get a plan.

Economy of scale, Since there are a fraction of all GSM subscribers
in the Americas as compared to the rest of the world the rest of the
world can get the 900/1800 dual band phones. It's not worth it for
Nokia to make two different phones if there's not the demand. Since
North America is the odd one in the litter they don't get the choice
that the majority of the world does.

That rationale was valid in the past, but no longer, since there are now well
over 50M GSM users (actual and impending) in the USA. The real problem is
that USA users tend to be interested only in basic phone features and cool
styling, whereas users overseas tend to be more interested in advanced
features, although that's changing, as reflected in the increased availability
of high-end phones
