Cellular Phone Forum / General / GSM / March 2005What is the catch here with this Treo 650 ?
I have been thinking of getting a Treo 350 I came across this ebay auction where he promises one for 300 $. What is the catch here ? He has good feedback but I still smell something fishy here. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=12506&item=7140067240&rd=1 When I emailed the guy he said I m expected to transfer the money to Western Union ( which means no protection at all for the sales ). Also wanted to ask if I can use one CDMA phone on another carrier. ( Example :can I use a sprint phone on Verozon ) Till now I have been making it a point that unless a phone is free, I would spend my money only to invest in GSM gadgets, as I can change the carrier. But somebody recently said that one can change the CDMA carrier by reprogramming the RLL inside the phone. Is this true. Don't count on changing the carrier though--you can get an unlocked Treo 650 or for a significant discount get one locked to a carrier. I suspect that most that are sold are going to be locked--I'm debating this myself, as well as debating whether to wait for Cobalt. You'll find, much to your chagrin, that GSM phones can also be subsidy locked. Cingular Orange and AT&T (Cingular Blue) do this routinely... in fact, an Orange phone can't even be activated on Blue and vice versa. SignatureE-mail fudged to thwart spammers. A friend of mine Signed up with ATT Wireless GSM with a GAIT phone just before the merger. ATT Wireless offered a plan which at the time seemed better to him than what VZW offered. He has found that if there is any ATT Wireless GSM signal his ATT Wireless GSM phone will lock on it even if there is a VERY strong Cingular GSM signal available. This results in poor service and dropped calls. He did find a way to force his phone to Cingular but it keeps changing back. Cingular said changing to a Cingular plan and a Cingular phone would fix this problem. Cingular phones will use ATT Wireless towers but ATT wireless phones have a problem using Cingular towers. He wishes he had never left VZW. Said he has more problems in the last 5 months with Cingular/ATT Wireless than he had the prior 7 years when he had VZW/CDMA. I thought all GSM (US version) phones were the same and worked with any GSM system to provide superior service. Cingular and ATT Wireless - both GSM - now one company - But ATT Wireless phones don't seem to work too well with Cingular. Each carrier had advantages and disadvantages. It's always advisable to choose what works for *you* in *your* area. It doesn't really matter what someone thinks of service in an area you will never visit. Cingular will be going through a few growing pains. Verizon's gone through most of its growing pains. When I set my ATTWS SIM to use Cingular Wireless GSM, it's on that system until I either set the phone to another system, or it loses signal, whichever is first. Days at a time - wow - that long. Lets see, last time I changed the system setting on my phone was - never. Had the phone over two years. I am not familiar with Setting the SIM to a System or Losing Signal. But then I don't have a GSM phone. I guess that is a disadvantage of using VZW/CDMA. >>That's odd. It scans and picks up all GSM networks (in the frequency ranges of the phone, of course), and even if you aren't allowed to roam on them, you know they are present. I pick which network I roam on in certain areas becaus I prefer that company over the other one and think my roaming revenues should be forwarded as I see fit...(I'm kind of curious as to whether or not Cingular allows GSM roaming on RCC Unicel, I'd rather forward my minutes of use to them than to Western Wireless/Alltel. In Europe GSM phones are routinely locked to the service provider providing the susidy on the original phone purchase however, most phones can be unlocked for a small fee and then swapping SIMs works quite simply. My Motorola v600 was unlocked by my provider for around $35 and I can generally by pre-paid SIMs wherever I travel and thereby use a local service. That's the catch. Was the sellers location different from where he wanted the MO mailed (i.e. Seller Located in: USA and asking for MO to be mailed to Romainia, Nigeria, etc? Why do you post about a phone that is currently only CDMA, with your question clearly about CDMA carriers, to a newsgroup about a carrier (T-Mobile) that is only GSM, in fact has GSM in the title of the NG. In fact, you also posted to a alt.cellular.gsm! It seems like you posted this to every single newsgroup with cellular in the title. Why? That's pretty inconsiderate, posting a message to newsgroups to which your post has no relation. (I'm not against cross-posting per se, by the way, if the message is relevant to the newsgroups posted to. For instance, in this case your message would have been relevant to the Verizon and Sprint newsgroups, and the Palm newsgroup.
