By term "sniffing" I tought if I I'm able, for example, to sniff some ip
traffic, can I also somehow get a copy of sms message on my cell phone (or
where ever) that has been sent from some gsm tel. number to somebody else
but me?

Igor

I could tell you, but the question itself implies you're a nosey
busy-body that would simply use the info to piss somebody off, and
then you'll be dead. Since I'm not in the business of cleaning up
other people's messes, I ain't sayin nuthin.

i've never heard about this, though it does sound very interesting. if not
for him, then would you care to share for the benefit of the rest of us?

Share what? Laughing, breaking my face, or sniffing SMS?
I'll assume sniffing SMS. It's doable if one has the necessary
equipment. Tech types in the industry have it, and they use it
regularly for trouble-shooting and maintenance issues. I imagine the
sheer cost of the equipment would keep things pretty quiet in public
circles. The bottom line is... if it's a radio signal, it's sniffable.

I thought I alrady replied to this but maybe that was in a different
newsgroup. Anyways... I don't have a lot of specifics but if you set your
NAM setting to match that of the phone you want to "sniff" you will get SOME
of the messages. Not all... actually, from my experiences it has been a
lot less. SMS just looks for a MIN match, not an ESN/MIN pair match. (At
least in the instances I've tested it in.) I'd like to hear of others
results though.
Why would you want to do this? Police departments all over are trying to
implement SMS into their means of reporting crimes ;)

In some situations you can just enter the same NAM settings into a phone as
the one your trying to "sniff from" per se. From what I understand the
provider does not require a matching ESN/MIN pair.. just the MIN. But this
doesn't seem to be a very reliable way. I don't know what variable causes
the sketchy-ness... RF fingerprinting would be an educated guess.
But anyways, some messages you receive and some you don't. If they weren't
intended for you to receive then you can't complain too much now can you ;)
Keep in mind that all the NAM settings have to be correct, including the
SID. (as far as know at least)
I have only played with this once... in theory (disclaimer). If you get it
to work please share your findings... in theory.
On a side note I happen to agree with Avid 508's reply to jer. Its hella
lame to ACT like you know something and not share one bit. Thats like
waving food in front of a starving mans mouth. My guess is you never even
had the food in the first place. My second guess is that your reply came
from the cross post in alt.cellular.gsm where you're fully backed by other
anal retentive wanna-know-it-all techs who for some odd reason think its
best to keep the end user ignorant of major security flaws. Yes, I DO
believe this is a major security flaw. One would be more secure using their
POCSAG encoded pager.
