Hello all!
A simple question: What command do phones send together with an SMS to
request its delivery confirmation?

They simply set bit 5 (the Status Report Request bit) within the
PDU-type octet of the SMS-submit message header.  If the SMSC of
lodgement supports delivery reports, this results in bit 5 (the
Status Report Indication bit) being set within PDU-type of the
corresponding SMS-deliver header.

Setting a bit means giving it a value of one.

This sort of thing is highly network dependent. Different networks use
different codes, some have no such code at all. Best to have a phone that
supports delivery confirmation.

                      totally

Here in Austria no network supports such a type of SMS conformation.

Thank you Michael. I stand corrected. 8-)

Thank you all!
And is the solution presented by John Henderson kind of universal?

Only to the extent that it's the method specified in the GSM
standards.  There's a sprinkling of homespun, ad hoc approaches
too.  And many carriers do not support delivery reports at all.

Thanks a lot! I will experiment with this...
BTW. Where did you find the information you gave me?
Do you have any URL with the SMS header speciffication?

The main source is GSM 03.40.  You can download this free (after
registering) from
www.etsi.org.  Go to "Get a Standard", "Download Now !", and
search for "03.40".  Pick a recent version from the unsorted
list.

You'd be advised to grab GSM 07.05, 07.07 and 03.38 while you're
there.  GSM 07.05 will tell you about text-mode and PDU-mode
(your phone might not support both), and the "AT+CMGF" command
used to switch modes.  You can setup the header in either mode,
but the mechanism is different.

If you settle for PDU-mode, the Siemens Internet PDF publication
"Developer's Guide: SMS with the SMS PDU-mode" has a lot of
clear, relevant information in the one place.  I don't have a
direct URL for it any more - let me know if you want a copy
(despam my address).
