I don't know the specifics for Tracfone but normally with GSM you can
put any SIM card in an unlocked phone.

Make that *normally.* TracFone is not normal and are specially
modified versions.

TracFone uses proprietary models that are incompatible with regular
GSM phones. Charging/debiting is done in the phone.

No, you have to use a phone that has Tracfone's proprietary firmware, as
all the acounting is done by the phone.
