The correct syntax is

       AT+CMGL="ALL"

with quotes around the command argument (GSM 07.05).

This is the text-mode form of the syntax, and will generate an
"ERROR" message if the device is in PDU-mode.  Use

       AT+CMGF?

to test the currently-set mode, and

       AT+CMGF=1

to enter text-mode.  The equivalent PDU-mode command (read all
messages) is

       AT+CMGL=4

(no quotes).

Which "AT+CPMS" syntax variant?  What do

       AT+CPMS=?

and

       AT+CMGL=?

return (in text-mode)?  What's the exact syntax of "AT+CMGL"
that you're using in text-mode?  Can you log the session with
Hyperterminal and post the results?

       AT+CMGL=4

should work after

       AT+CMGF=0

(PDU-mode) and

       AT+CMGL="ALL"

should work after

       AT+CMGF=1

(text-mode).  But note the quotes and the upper-case.  These can
be crucial with many devices.

This doesn't look good.  The list of supported memories is
empty.

> OK
> AT+CMGL=?
> ERROR

I'm sorry, but this means that "AT+CMGL" isn't supported by this
device.

To me, this doesn't sound right for a Symbian device.  Do you
have an "AT Command Set" manual for this phone?

Is there some other command necessary to enable ordinary GSM/3G
commands?

I found a Nokia manual at http://tinyurl.com/agvs2 - it says the
typical response to

       AT+CPMS=?

should be:

       +CPMS: ("ME","SM"),("ME","SM"),("MT")

According to that manual, the default setting for "AT+CFUN" is
zero (minimum functionality).  That being the case, you might
need to do

       AT+CFUN=1

to enable full functionality.

You might also need to investigate the "AT+CPIN" command to see
if you're being blocked by PIN security.
