unlock nokia 1100?

I have a locked nokia 1100 from tracfone and I see tons of web sites
offering to unlock this phone for a few bucks by giving a code based on my
IMEI#.

How do they get the algorithm to generate the unlock code? Did they license
it from the maker of the phone, or is this public knowledge? Is there a free
site to help me unlock this phone?

There are calculators that use various algorithms to generate codes based
upon the IMEI number and the particulars of the phone hardware.

Unlocking a Tracfone handset will accomplish nothing, as it uses custom
firmware for monitoring account balance. This makes it unuseable on
another GSM carrier even if unlocked.
