I need a SIM card for round the world travel. Primarily southern
hemisphere (Brazil, Austrailia, China, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, South
Africa.  I'd like to be able to do full research, including rates for
each country and also what country my phone number would be in.  Any
recommendations or referrals to good comparison sites would be
appreciated.

Thanks!

Japan is likely to be a problem. A Virgin Mobile sim will take care of
the rest I believe. Japan uses a  unique system, called PDC, which is
a Time Division multiple access technology, but does not have
interoperability with IS-136, GSM or D-AMPS.  PDC also has spectrum in
little bits widely scattered, I have never heard of a phone that is
both GSM and PDC, but I suppose it is possible.

A GSM operator that has roaming with Docomo and a dual mode GSM-UTMS phone
should be fine for Japan and the rest of the world (assuming appropriate
roaming agreements world wide).

Check out www.prepaidgsm.net. The international SIM section should have some
information you can use. You may want to look for a phone with UMTS
(WCDMA-2100) in addition to GSM 900 & 1800. Japan does not have GSM but does
have WCDMA-2100. The Motorola A980 (or A975) is a good choice, but there are
others as well.
