Travelled to Italy this summer and bought an unlocked Motorola L2 GSM
phone and a TIM (Italy) SIM card. Now I'm back home. Is this phone
useless? Can I buy a SIM here in the US that works with a US carrier?

Depends.

The L2 comes in tri-band and quad-band GSM varieties, depending on country
of sale and carrier branding. One thing to check is the bands displayed in
the manual network setup menu.

If it has 1900 MHz, you can use it on T-Mobile USA.
If it has 850 and 1900 MHz, you can also use it on Cingular USA.

Thanks, Mike.

I think it's quadband. Do you know if I can use it as a pre-paid phone
with either t-mobile or cingular? Not interested in signing up for
monthly service.

An unlocked quad band GSM phone will work as prepaid on either carrier.

As long as the phone is unlocked, and supports GSM 1900, it should
work with a locally purchased SIM from T-Mobile. Cingular is a bit
dicier, because Cingular is largely composed of former wireline
licenses, as a result  a lot of the Cingular network is on 850Mhz,
quad band phones in Europe are very rare creatures.

Yup no worries so long as the phone is unlocked it should
work with USA T-mobile. Some phones come unlocked already.
