That article was... unfulfilling.  It lacked any degree of useful
detail.

The presentation referenced at Crypto 2003 was "Instant
Ciphertext-Only Cryptanalysis of GSM Encrypted Communication" by
Elad Barkan,  Eli Biham,  and Nathan Keller.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/brasilcrypt/message/90

Brasilcrypt points out that this is a cryptanalysis against A5/2.

"Instant ciphertext-only cryptanalysis of GSM encrypted communication
- E Barkan, E Biham, N Keller - para clonar linha GSM com protocolo
A5/2 em menos de um segundo, off-the-air."

The conference proceedings are available, in paper, for 70 Euros from
http://www.springer.de/

Eli Biham had previously published "Cryptanalysis of the A5/1 GSM
Stream Cipher" with Orr Dunkelman.

Also of interest is:
http://www.simovits.com/archive/a52.pdf
Cryptanalysis of the A5/2 algorithm
By Slobodan Petrovic and Amparo Fuster-Sabater, Instituto de Fisica
Aplicada, Spain.
