Dual-SIM friendly quad band phone?

Has anyone had good experience with a recent quad-band phone and a dual
SIM adaptor which does NOT require cutting the SIM cards to fit?

By this I mean the type of dual-sim adaptor which usually has either 2 SIM
sockets on the end of a cable, or a double-decker arrangement for the
phone's socket and a second socket on the end of a cable.

The mechanical issues are:

1.  The hardware on the end of the socket must be thin enough to fit over
or under the battery without having to modify the rear cover of the phone.

2. The cable exits the phone's SIM socket at a place where there is
clearance and no obstruction.

This is for travel, and I don't want to buy a local SIM in a foreign country
only to have to start cutting the SIM to fit into one of those
postage-stamp size adaptors while on the road.
