I've subscribed to a local phone coop cell phone
service and they use GSM.

They are very open to buying my own unlocked GSM phone
and letting me use it on their system.

I'm a starving college student and just need a robust
but cheap GSM phone that I can buy used on ebay.

Any advice on models and brands that one could buy
cheap yet be robust and decent phone?

It would help immensely if you told us where (in which country) you
reside!

Depending on what you need, one of the most capable phones ever made for
sale here was the Siemens S56, which was usually locked to ATT. You can get
them unlocked.
It's more globablly-capable brother, the S55, is also a GREAT phone, and I
love mine.
Bought it on Ebay for 40.

Is the above phone REALLY a good one?

Good sound quality, reception, big enough keys, etc?

I'm leaning towards it why I ask

The Motorola v66 does it for me.  It's about 45 on eBay, unlocked and
including shipping - less if you hunt for it a bit.  Watch out for companies
with more than a percent or two of complaints.
