Sure it's possible. T-Mobile supports this, to all three Irish carriers.
Maybe Cingular and AT&T, too. Sprint and Verizon are doubtful, since they
have no GSM side. Return route from Ireland to US is more tenuous due to the
difficulty of routing SMS to US phone numbers.

Thanks... one more question..AT&T's list doesn't have ireland in it, only UK
(T-mobile).  Does that mean that there is no way i can call ireland using
at&t?

also, there is a gsm phone (1900) that i would love.  T-mobile doesn't have
it.  Could i buy it unlocked and transfer the T-mobile SIM card into it?
Would that work?

Thanks

Alan,
I simply can't believe that AT&T (GSM), who has very good GSM roaming
agreements in many places, does not have roaming with at least one of the
Irish carriers. I can beleive that their webiste is not up to date with
their roaming list. Go to http://www.gsmworld.com and look at the Irish
carriers' roaming lists. See if *they* list AT&T. If they do, I'd take that
as a strong indication. As for calling from the US to Ireland, that's a
no-brainer. That has to work, but just be sure of the rates first. BTW,
there may be some issue wrt sending international SMS from AT&T and
Cingular. I don't use their phones so can't advise you on that.

Yep. In fact, I've never bought a phone from T-Mobile. I always buy unlocked
phones and transfer my SIM into them.

And you probably won't. Company websites don't tell you the half of it. If
you want to get T-Mobile (USA) details I suggest alt.cellular.vociestream
(former name of T-Mobile) or HowardForums.com

I don't have any trouble SMSing people in the UK, in particular on the
Orange (O2?) network, from my T-Mobile phone being used in Philadelphia.

Make sure you're using a fully qualified phone number.

Yes it will. The beauty of GSM and SIM cards.
