Greetings. I have had the Telestial Passport for nearly a year and it
has been one disaster after another. I write in the hopes of saving
others time, money and frustration. I have used the Passport in
France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Mexico, Peru, Singapore and China. In
each of these countries, text messages have frequently disappeared and
incoming callers have complained that they cannot reach me. Telestial
acknowledged problems and recently recalled the SIM, replacing it with
a newer one that they assured me would fix these issues. I just took
it to Italy and Germany for a week and I'm sorry to say that it is
worse than before! Now, you can't hang up calls without resetting the
phone and rebooting! You can't leave a voicemail. Text messages are
still unreliable, particularly from the US. Telestial takes no
responsibility for this terrible service. They claim compatibility
issues with my phone, which is just silly: It's a triband GSM and I
have successfully used it with prepaid SIM cards in many countries--
always the better option. I liked the idea of the Passport so I would
have a working number as soon as I land somewhere, and so I can avoid
buying a local SIM on short trips. But Telestial's product is simply a
joke. In failing to take responsibility for the defective product,
they are demonstrating that they either don't really understand the
very technology they are selling or, worse, they are willing to rip
off their customers. Best of luck to all and happy travels, Peter

Telestial's support issues notwithstanding, your phone may still be
contributing to your problems. International calling SIMs like these rely
upon the GSM phone supporting certain data and programming protocols in
order to implement the callback system that is the reason they can offer
cheap rates in the first place. Local prepaid SIMs from other countries
don't - and the fact that your phone works with those says nothing about
what you should expect with a specialized product that uses special tricks
to achieve low rates.

I'm having my wife try out MaxRoam ("http://maxroam.com/") on a European
trip next month. I first ordered a GeoSim because of free incoming
calls, but between the time of my order and when it was to be shipped,
they went out of business ("http://www.globalsimcard.co.uk/index.php").

I had such a very different expereince with Telestial - I too have
used the Passport all over Europe on a couple of different trips.
When I intially received my Passport I called Telestial just to make
sure I woudl be all set when I landed in Germany. I had never used a
SIM unlocked phone before (which of course is easy- but as is
everything once you know how to do it) -the staff member walked me
through everything and even had me laughing by the end of the call. I
bought the Passport for a good friend of mine (primarily so that I can
track him down where ever he goes) no complaints from him either.
Sorry that you had such a bad expereince!

My experience was different with Telestial - I contacted them for a
GSM sim card and Satellite phone rental for a trip I made to the
Amazon basin, and then to Europe, and things worked out well. They
answered my email questions, as well as answered the phone when I
called with a question about the Satellite phone. (Other on-line
vendors don't even answer the phone). The Satellite phone was my one
link to the outside world for several days, and the Telestial tech
walked me through the set-up just before I left cell phone coverage -
which turned out to be key while I was up river. For the Europe phase
of my trip, my Passport service worked well - I was in several
countries, and stayed connected. And, it did save me money over
roaming with my US number - this gave my office and associates one
number to call across several countries. So, I feel like they backed-
me up when I had questions, stayed on the phone with me when I was a
little dense, and got me what I needed.

The Maxroam SIM is working well, but I probably wouldn't buy it again.
There are cheaper SIM cards such as CelTrek "http://www.celtrek.com/",
with slightlyvlower rates though a higher initial cost.
Maxroam is Euro based, and as the Bushies destroy the U.S. economy, the
Maxroam rates keep going up for U.S. residents.
